It was a crazy opening to NBA free agency, with a bunch of trades changing the landscape of the league, especially the Eastern Conference -- Kawhi Leonard is a Raptor again, and Jaylen Brown is now a member of the 76ers. Then, we have to push it forward: Where is LeBron James going next as a free agent?
The answer might be a little bit clearer after the flurry of trades and free agency signings. But it's also clear that the teams in the running for LeBron may be holding room for him in some fashion. It's The Decision... 4.0? 5.0? I've lost track at this point.
Anyway, let's refocus: Here are some landing spots for LeBron:
There are rumblings that the Sixers are interested. And why not? They have a terrific young backcourt with Tyrese Maxey and VJ Edgecombe, the addition of Brown to replace Paul George, an MVP-if-he's-healthy in Joel Embiid. From a hoops perspective, this could make a ton of sense.
Another dream scenario from a "let's go win one last ring" perspective. I don't fully see it happening, but maybe he wants to get this franchise back over the top for Gregg Popovich.
There's been a ton of buzz about him getting to team up with Steph Curry beyond All-Star games and the Olympics. Not sure this is the best route to a title, though.
A franchise that has talent on paper but it's missing the kind of player who can will them to postseason success. The perfect bookend to James' career and a third return to his home state.
Could he fit in with Giannis? Sure! Why not? Taking his talents to South Beach again would just be the most fun.
