Osa Odighizuwa is leaving Dallas behind for good.
The San Francisco 49ersacquired the defensive lineman from the Cowboys on March 11 in exchange for a 2026 third-round pick to fortify the team's beleaguered front four. It was an abrupt end his time in Dallas, and Odighizuwa acknowledged the trade stung, but he isn't harping on the past.
"There's definitely a lot of love [with the Cowboys] that I still have," Odighizuwa said, via the San Francisco Chronicle. "So it's definitely one of those that hurt. It's the business, something I'd never experienced before, but it kind of is what it is. Gotta always say this: bury the dead, feed the living. What happened happened. I can only do the best with what I have, be where my feet are and make the most of the opportunity I have in front of me."
The 49ers are betting Odighizuwa, 32, has plenty left to give after being drafted in the third round in 2021. In five seasons with Dallas, he appeared in 84 games and started 76, recording 216 tackles, 81 quarterback hits and 17 sacks to go along with two forced fumbles. Now he steps into a starting role in San Francisco, where he is expected to line up at defensive tackle alongside Alfred Collins. C.J. West and 2026 rookie Gracen Halton are projected as the backups behind them.
For a 49ers defense looking to reestablish itself as one of the league's most disruptive front fours, adding a proven interior pass rusher with Odighizuwa's track record fills a real need. His ability to generate quarterback hits — 81 in his career — speaks to his consistency as a disruptive force even when sacks don't follow.
He may have left Dallas under difficult circumstances, but Odighizuwa sounds like someone who has already moved on mentally.
