Question marks define the San Francisco 49ers wide receiver room entering training camp.

The glut of uncertainty at the position makes it clear the 49ers need to get a contract done with WR Jauan Jennings after news came out that the five-year veteran is disgruntled with the pay on the final year of a two-year extension he signed last offseason. Jennings, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter, wants either a contract extension or a trade.

In mid-July it's difficult to envision the 49ers flipping the 28-year-old receiver for anything more than a 2026 draft pick. While getting anything back for Jennings is preferable to losing him for nothing in free agency, moving on from Jennings now leaves the 49ers and franchise quarterback Brock Purdy in a tough spot entering the 2025 season.

Let's assume for now that WR Brandon Aiyuk will start the year on the Physically Unable to Perform list. NBC Sports Bay Area's Matt Maiocco made it clear that's a route the 49ers could go as Aiyuk makes his way back from ACL and MCL tears in Week 7 of last season.

If Aiyuk is on PUP and Jennings gets traded, the 49ers receiving corps looks something like this to begin the season:

  • Ricky Pearsall
  • Demarcus Robinson
  • Jacob Cowing
  • Jordan Watkins (Rookie)
  • Junior Bergen (Rookie)
  • Isaiah Neyor (Rookie)
  • Russell Gage
  • Isaiah Hodgins
  • Malik Knowles
  • Terique Owens

It's not a group that inspires a ton of confidence when considering Pearsall's injury issues in training camp last year and Robinson's potential three-game suspension.

With so many unknowns at WR, the 49ers badly need stability at the position. Jennings is one of the steadiest players on their roster and he revealed a ton of upside in an extended role with the 49ers last year. Unless he is intransigent with outrageous contract demands, San Francisco should be working hard to get Jennings locked in on a new deal. Their receiving corps in 2025 may not hold up without him.
