Brandon Aiyuk is technically still a member of the San Francisco 49ers roster, but the likelihood is dropping each day that fans will ever see him suit up for the franchise again
Aiyuk posted back-to-back 1,000-yard seasons at his peak, but an injury sidelined him for over half of the 2024 season. But when it was time to return to the franchise, Aiyuk went no-contact and did not play for San Francisco last season. He has been pushing for a trade or to be released, and he desires landing in Washington – but his antics have seemingly slowed the possibility of that occurring as well.
The 49ers have reported to camp for the 2026 season, and Aiyuk is once again absent. And on Saturday, GM John Lynch offered an update on the situation – which only reiterated that it doesn't seem likely he'll be making his return any time in the near future, as Aiyuk is still on the 'left squad' list, and Lynch didn't have much else to say about the receiver.
“I’m personally, and we as an organization, are going to focus on the players who are here,” Lynch said. “We wish him well, we wish his family well.”
It seems pretty clear at this point that the relationship between the two parties has been soured beyond repair. And Aiyuk definitely does not appear to be interested in returning to San Francisco. So it makes sense that Aiyuk would be on the 'left squad' list after officially no-showing for camp, as it allows the franchise to open a valuable spot on the roster for someone to fill that gap.
