Wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk has had a lot to say this offseason about his desire to play for the Commanders, but the 49ers have not released him and General Manager John Lynch did not make it sound like that is going to happen in the immediate future when he spoke to reporters from the team's training camp on Saturday.
Aiyuk did not play at all last season and the 49ers placed him on the reserve/left squad list in December after voiding the remaining guarantees on his contract earlier in the year. That move came because Aiyuk did not rehab a knee injury with the team and he has said that he won't move for reinstatement because he refuses to do "any business" with the club.
Doing so would force the 49ers to make a decision about cutting him loose, but the status quo leaves the 49ers with little reason to make a move and Lynch said that he's going to keep his attention on players that are still with the team.
“Brandon is on a left squad designation," Lynch said. "As such, he’s not on our 90-man roster. I, personally, and we as an organization, are going to focus on the players that are here. I don’t have anything to add to that. We wish him well. We wish his family well.”
The 49ers play the Commanders in Week 6, but it doesn't look like Aiyuk will be playing for anybody in that contest or any other unless he decides on a different course of action in the near future.
