The San Francisco 49ers not only avoided a couple of disastrous injuries in their win over the Tennessee Titans on Sunday, they also got some additional good injury news with a handful of players set to return for their Week 16 showdown against the Indianapolis Colts.
Head coach Kyle Shanahan on Monday spoke with reporters on a conference call and gave some positive updates on a variety of 49ers injury situations.
Here's what those updates looked like:
Shanahan's description of Pearsall's injuries were largely the same as his updates in his postgame press conference. He said there was an aggravation of Pearsall's previous PCL injury and that the ankle injury he sustained was the low ankle variety that shouldn't keep him out for an extended period. Pearsall's status for Week 16 is in the air, but it doesn't sound like either ailment is a long-term issue.
Burford suffered an ankle injury Sunday, but avoided any major issues and Shanahan anticipates Burford will practice in the leadup to Week 16. This is a significant win for the 49ers. Burford has been good filling in at left guard since Ben Bartch went down. Their backup is rookie seventh-round pick Connor Colby who had an up-and-down tenure as the 49ers' starting LG when Burford and Bartch were hurt earlier this season.
This was an under-the-radar significant injury scare for the 49ers on Sunday. They listed Elliott as an inactive after he hurt his knee in warmups. Shanahan on Monday said there wasn't any major damage and the expectation is for Elliott to practice and gear up to play against Indianapolis.
A high ankle sprain in Week 11 vs. the Arizona Cardinals sent Bethune to the sideline for the last three games. Shanahan is expecting him to return to practice ahead of Week 16. His return means Curtis Robinson will be moved back to a special teams role.
Okuayinonu is also dealing with a high ankle sprain and is expected to return to practice after missing two games. He was hurt in Week 12 vs. the Carolina Panthers. His return will give the 49ers some much-needed depth at defensive end.
Shanahan said Martin is still in the concussion protocol. He went into the protocol after leaving the 49ers' Week 13 game against the Cleveland Browns early. Even after a couple weeks off he's still in the protocol.
