The San Francisco 49ers on Tuesday made a bittersweet set of roster moves as they began their preparations to face the Seattle Seahawks in the divisional round of the playoffs.

In the set of moves where they officially opened the practice window for linebacker Fred Warner, San Francisco also placed tight end George Kittle on season-ending IR after he tore his Achilles in the team's wild card win over the Philadelphia Eagles.

In a corresponding move to Kittle being placed on IR, tight end Brayden Willis was promoted to the active roster from the practice squad.

Warner was officially limited in practice as the club aims to get him ready for a return in the NFC championship game should they make it that far. Kittle's future is in the air as he begins the long road to recovery from an Achilles tear.

For Willis, Sunday would mark his seventh game of the season if he's active. All signs point to him suiting up since the club was only carrying three tight ends including Kittle. Willis figures to slot in as the third TE behind Luke Farrell and Jake Tonges.

The 49ers selected Willis in the seventh round of the 2023 draft. He's played in 23 regular season games as a pro with no receptions on three targets in 86 offensive snaps. He also saw action in all three of the team's playoff games during his rookie season, including some looks on offense in the Super Bowl.

Willis despite his lack of production is still an interesting player who may just never quite reach the upside that looked to be there when the club drafted him. He put together a nice training camp this year and hauled in three balls for 14 yards in the preseason.

While Willis took the roster spot vacated by Kittle, it'll be Farrell and Tonges doing the heavy lifting in replacing the 49ers' superstar TE. Farrell takes on more of the blocking responsibilities while Tonges has proven his value as a pass catcher this season. Expect to see plenty of both when the 49ers visit the Seahawks on Saturday night.
