The San Francisco 49ers are bringing a familiar face back to their tight end room. They announced Friday veteran tight end Ross Dwelley is rejoining the club on a one-year contract.

Dwelley was an undrafted free agent signing by the 49ers after the 2018 draft. He spent six seasons in San Francisco and played in 84 games with 17 starts. Last offseason he signed with the Atlanta Falcons where he played in all 17 games and caught one pass for five yards.

This is an interesting addition to the 49ers TE room after they didn't use any draft capital at the position this year. They did sign free agent Luke Farrell, but outside of that the group was rounded out with unproven options like Brayden Willis and Jake Tonges.

Dwelley is a veteran who has a lot of versatility and some pass-catching chops. He lines up all over the field and has stepped in at fullback when Kyle Juszczyk was unavailable.

In 101 games Dwelley has 45 catches for 523 yards and five touchdowns. He'll compete for a spot on the 53-man roster and could have an inside track because of his experience and versatility in a TE group that's lacking in both areas.
