The Indianapolis Colts have re-signed tight end Mo Alie-Cox, the team announced on Friday.
This will be Alie-Cox's ninth season with the team after originally signing as an undrafted rookie following the 2017 NFL draft.
Alie-Cox's role within this Colts' offense has primarily been as a blocker. This past season, he would rank 15th out of 80 eligible tight ends in PFF's run-blocking grade.
That ability at the tight end position is a very important one within Shane Steichen's offense.
In the passing game, Alie-Cox's role has been much smaller. Over the last two seasons, he's caught a combined 25 passes for 308 yards and four touchdowns.
Tight end has been a major need for the Colts this offseason, but re-signing Alie-Cox shouldn't impact their draft plans whatsoever. Tight end, specifically finding a greater presence in the passing game, will still be high up on the to-do list.
However, what Alie-Cox does provide is stability at a position group that was lacking depth and a skill set with his blocking ability that is vital to making Steichen's offense go.
