For the first time since training camp began last week, the Washington Commanders donned the pads on Monday. It's an exciting time for players and for the fans in attendance. The energy is higher, and practice feels more like a game-like situation.
It was a good session for quarterback Jayden Daniels and the offense. Throughout the first few days of camp, we've heard how the defense has had the upper hand on the offense. While Monday's practice was another good one for the defense, this was much more even than the previous three practices.
Several players stood out on Monday, but we're going to narrow it down to our top four standouts from Washington's first padded practice.
Daniels got the fans excited early, finding McLaurin in the back corner of the end zone for a touchdown. It was a perfectly thrown ball, and McLaurin did the rest to get his feet down. That one had the crowd excited. There was much more of that from Daniels on Monday. He had a nice touchdown pass to tight end Chig Okonkwo while on the move. Daniels hasn't been bad at all, but Monday was his best practice. His accuracy was the best it's been through four practices.
It was the best day for wide receivers all camp so far. McLaurin had a good day, and so did rookie Antonio Williams. But Lane, a fourth-round pick in 2025, had a terrific day. He caught multiple touchdowns and was catching the ball much more cleanly than he did as a rookie. Lane's explosiveness is real. He has a roster spot locked up because he's a weapon as a punt returner. But if Lane keeps having good days at receiver, he's going to put himself in the mix to receive more snaps on offense. It was an encouraging day for Lane.
On the first day in pads, most of the excitement centered on seeing first-round linebacker Sonny Styles in pads for the first time as a pro. He made his impact felt immediately, delivering a blow to running back Jacory Croskey-Merritt. Styles made a couple of plays in the passing game, too. His speed is so different than what Washington fans are accustomed to at linebacker. The same goes for Leo Chenal. Styles was all over the place on Monday. And he just looks the part.
Sainristil was playing inside and outside on Monday. While he did allow the touchdown to McLaurin early in practice, it was strong coverage. He was beaten by a terrific throw. Sainristil got his revenge later, breaking up a pair of plays in the red zone. It's been a good camp so far for Sainristil. Confidence is everything. Washington needs a strong bounce-back year from Sainristil, and he seems up to the task.
