The Washington Commanders opened training camp on Wednesday. While the pads have yet to come on, it was still a competitive Day 1 of camp.
Quarterback Jayden Daniels was back and 100%, as was star wide receiver Terry McLaurin. While it was a good day for all, as often is the case early in training camp, the defense had the upper hand for most of the day. That's not to say it was a bad day for the offense, but if you were taking score, Day 1 probably goes to the defense.
So, which players stood out on Day 1? We look at four standouts from the first day of Washington's training camp.
It almost feels like everyone forgets about Treylon Burks when discussing who could step up as Washington's No. 2 receiver opposite Terry McLaurin. Remember, the 6-foot-2, 225-pound Burks is a former first-round pick. It didn't work out in Tennessee, primarily due to injuries. But when the Commanders signed Burks last season, he flashed. Enough so that Washington brought him back in 2026.
On the first day of training camp, Burks took advantage of his opportunities. He caught a touchdown pass from Daniels, making an excellent adjustment to the football, highlighting his potential. The more that Burks flashes this summer, along with others, such as Dyami Brown and Antonio Williams, the less likely Washington will be to add a veteran receiver like Stefon Diggs.
Speaking of Williams, the third-round rookie from Clemson showed he has something others on the roster lack. He is exceptional at creating separation, which could make him the ideal slot receiver for David Blough and the Commanders. So, while Burks and Brown compete to be the No. 2 receiver, Williams appears to be on track to serve as Washington's slot receiver. He can play outside, too. A great start to training camp for Williams. It will be fun to follow his progress throughout the summer.
The Commanders made edge rusher Odafe Oweh their top offseason acquisition. Some believed Washington may have overpaid Oweh by giving him a four-year deal worth $100 million. Nevermind that Oweh is only 27 and coming off his best two seasons. In his first training camp practice for the Commanders, Oweh stood out. His size (6-foot-5, 251) was noticeable, but it was more about his length. While everyone talks about rushing the passer and sacks, Oweh's length can create problems for opposing quarterbacks. He impacted one Jayden Daniels' throw on Wednesday, using his long arms to knock his pass down.
You know who needed a strong start to training camp? Cornerback Mike Sainristil. He had that on Wednesday, breaking up a pass in the end zone intended for Dyami Brown. Sainristil had a difficult second NFL season in 2025. Getting off to a fast start under new defensive coordinator Daronte Jones could be huge for Sainristil. Confidence has never been an issue for Sainristil. Washington's improved pass rush should go a long way in getting Sainristil back on track in 2026.
