If ever Muzzy Donohue needed to center himself on Friday at TPC Twin Cities in Blaine, he simply looked down at his ball marker and the memory of his late grandma Marcey snapped him back into focus.
“We’ve been talking about our grandma and how she’s been with us,” said Donohue, a 25-year-old former graduate of St. Thomas Academy, who is playing the 3M Open this week on a sponsor’s exemption. “She passed away on Monday.”
As hard as it’s been on the whole family to lose its matriarch, Donohue said he couldn’t help but feel like some divine intervention was at play as he shot an impressive 8-under 63 to make the cut in his PGA Tour debut.
There were a number of putts that Donohue either pushed or pulled that somehow found their way into the back of the cup. He’s operating as if he’s had somebody looking down on him from above.
“Yes, 100%,” Donohue said. “Hopefully, she’s not sick of me and will stick around.”
It’s also helped for Donohue to have his cousin Harrison serving as his caddie. As an overanalyzer by nature, he said it’s been good to have somebody help take his mind off golf on some of those long walks up the fairway.
“He’s been purely just like the vibes guy,” Donohue said. “It’s been great having him on the bag.”
The local fan fare had certainly showed up in droves for Donohue this week. His gallery was noticeably larger than that some of his peers despite the fact that he’s not technically a member of the PGA Tour.
“It’s been awesome being kind of the hometown kid, having a bunch of my friends come out and watch,” said Donohue, a former goaltender for St. Thomas Academy, who is sitting at 6-under par heading into the weekend. “I’m not used to hearing some roars for the birdie putts dropping, so that’s super fun for me.”
The success that Donohue is currently enjoying is a continuation for him after winning the Minnesota State Open a couple of weeks ago. He played collegiate at Boston College and is hoping he’s able to carve out a niche on the PGA Tour at some point down the road.
“It’s nice to kind of see the hard work continue to pay off,” Donohue said. “Obviously, I would love to continue to play on the PGA Tour if I play well this weekend.”
Not that Donohue is getting too far ahead of himself. He’s simply trying to soak in the moment as best he can and not take any of this experience for granted.
“It comes back to the process,” Donohue said. “That helps me focus on what I can control and then let everything work out from there.”
