Former MLB manager Bobby Cox died Saturday. He was 84.

And fiery till the end, no doubt.

Best known for his on-field temper and guidance to helping create an Atlanta Braves' dynasty, highlighted by the 1995 World Series championship and 14 consecutive NL East titles and five NL pennants. The 2014 Pro Baseball Hall of Fame inductee passed away because of complications from a prolonged illness at his home in Marietta, Georgia.

"We are overcome with emotion on the passing of Bobby Cox, our treasured skipper," a Braves statement read. "Bobby was the best manager to ever wear a Braves uniform. "And while Bobby's passion for the game was unparalleled, his love for baseball was exceeded only by his love for his family."

A true character of the game, Cox helped mold the long-suffering Braves franchise into a consistent contender, ushering in a new era. With cable television emerging in the 1980s, the Braves became an institution on TBS, starting at 7:05 p.m. ET.

A major league manager for 29 seasons, including 25 with the Braves, Cox compiled 2,504 wins, fourth most in history.

Former players looked at Cox as a father figure who would fight ferociously for his team, which he considered a second family.

Cox established an MLB mark with 162 ejections that likely will never be broken, especially with the ABS Challenge System eliminating some strike-zone chirps.

John McGraw, who ranked second on the ejection list, managed four more seasons than Cox and was thrown out 41 fewer times.
