Joint-worst 39 goals in the Bundesliga and 19 in the Champions League, and three in each of their four matches in 2026: Eintracht Frankfurt are ruining their season by conceding too many goals.
Wednesday's 3-2 defeat at Qarabag which saw them eliminated from the Champions League was the latest setback as the team managed no turnaround under caretaker coach Dennis Schmitt following the dismissal of Dino Toppmöller.
"It can not be that that we concede twice again late in a game. We concede three goals in every match. Then it is difficult to win matches," midfielder Ansgar Knauff told streaming portal DAZN.
Frankfurt led 2-1 in Baku which would have kept them in the chase for a play-off spot but Camilo Duran in the 80th and Bahlul Mustafazade in stoppage time condemned them to defeat and exit from the elite event.
Having also been eliminated in the German Cup in autumn, Frankfurt must now fully focus on the Bundesliga where they have not won since mid-December and are ranked seventh going into a weekend match against in-form Hoffenheim.
"There were signs of progress but we also made one mistake too many," Schmitt said. "We’ll analyse everything, discuss the mistakes honestly and then put everything into winning against Hoffenheim."
Knauff said the team still has "the same issues" as in the past weeks under Toppmöller, and board member for sport Markus Krösche agreed.
"We're going through a rough patch right now. You can see the mental state of the lads, we keep falling back into the same patterns. It's our inability to prevent these kind of goals," the Bild paper quoted him as saying.
