Shubman Gill and Sai Sudharsan slammed for reckless shots in RCB vs GT IPL 2026 final

Gujarat Titans openers Shubman Gill and Sai Sudharsan headed into the final as two of the most in-form players in the IPL 2026 season. Both openers had scored more than 700 runs in the season and were strong contenders for the Orange Cap award.

Sudharsan and Gill, who had registered a record century opening partnership in their win over RR in Qualifier 2, were expected to get the show running for the 2022 IPL champions.

Unfortunately for GT, captain Shubman Gill first went back to the pavilion in the third over after scoring 10(8). Gill half-heartedly attempted to play a short-ball outside the off-stump from Josh Hazlewood but the ball hit the lower side of the blade and went straight up in the air, before Rajat Patidar took the catch.

In the next over, it was Sudharsan's turn to return to the pavilion as he nicked Bhuvneshwar Kumar's delivery to Jitesh Sharma for 12(12).

The GT openers' knocks were slammed by fans and experts. Reacting to their innings, journalist Vikrant Gupta said: "Neither Shubman Gill nor Sai Sudarshan can look their team in the eye with those reckless shots."

Fans react strongly to Shubman Gill and Sai Sudharsan's dismissals

If I had a penny for Shubman Gill getting out to that shot in crucial matches…

Both Sai Sudharsan and Shubman Gill are out for cheap when it mattered the most. Only good thing is that Orange Cap is now locked for Vaibhav Sooryavanshi.

Shubman Gill and Sai Sudharsan have been getting out inside the powerplay far too often this season.

Vaibhav Sooryavanshi set to win Orange Cap after Gill and Sudharsan's early dismissals

With Gill and Sudharsan dismissed early in the final, RR wonderkid Vaibhav Sooryavanshi is the favourite to win the Orange Cap award in IPL 2026.

The young opener will now become the youngest recipient of the award at the age of just 15 after he scored 776 runs in 16 innings for RR. Unless Virat Kohli scores 177 runs during RCB's run chase, Sooryavanshi will win the award.
