Feb. 3—JAMESTOWN — On Jan. 30, Jamestown High School head boys basketball coach, Tim Ranum, left Jerry Meyer Arena a little bit discouraged by his team's performance against Mandan.

What a difference four days can make.

The Blue Jays picked up conference win No. 2 of the season, dispatching Bismarck St. Mary's 67-56 Tuesday night. Jamestown will be back at Jerry Meyer Arena on Feb. 6 hosting Bismarck Legacy beginning at 7:45 p.m.

"This was an all-around effort," Ranum said after the win. "Every aspect was really good."

Things didn't start out all that great though.

"We let them dictate a lot of things and they were way too comfortable. We let them get easy shots and it seemed like they were getting every rebound," Ranum said. "From three minutes left in the first half, it started to get a little bit better. We were pretty fortunate to get it to nine at half.

"The kids got challenged a little bit at halftime," he said. "They needed to rise up and put forth more effort. What changed was that we came out at halftime a lot more aggressive. (St. Mary's) ended up going on a run because they are a good team. In previous games, we might have folded but we stayed the course. We were able to run our stuff, the kids made plays to one another and it ended up being a great night."

St. Mary's led 36-27 at the halftime break.

Eric Van Berkom scored the first points of the second half with a long-range three that put the Jays within six of the game leaders. The sophomore led the Jays in total scoring with 21 points.

"I want people in Jamestown to understand that he's a sophomore kid and it's not easy for a sophomore to play at this level," Ranum said. "He's really starting to grow in front of our eyes. When he has the ball, good things happen. His vision has been tremendous, he's been getting high quality shots off, he just makes us better. He makes everything easier for Edison (Walters) and all the other guys are getting looks just because he is being a force."

Van Berkom's ice breaking shot kicked off a 6-0 run by the Jays to make it 36-34 St. Mary's. The two teams traded shots but the tides turned when Walters hit a pair of foul shots to tie the game at 51 with less than six minutes to play.

From there, Van Berkom hit the go ahead layup and senior Gradin Thorlakson went 2-for-2 at the foul line to make it 55-51.

"He got a rebound and a kid just kind of grabbed him from behind so they called an intentional foul behind the ball," Ranum said of Thorlakson. "He hit four big free throws for us down the stretch."

After Jamestown nabbed the lead, the home team didn't give it up.

Sophmore Griffin Gegelman received a pass from Van Berkom and laid it to make it 57-51. St. Mary's scored three points out of a timeout but Van Berkom two more soft-touch shots to make it 61-54. A 6-2 run by the Jays was the final nail in the coffin.

"Our kids did a good job of forcing them to take tough shots over us so obviously defensively we weren't picking up a lot of fouls and we put them at a disadvantage almost every time on the offensive end and when that happens we are going to go to the line," Ranum said. "I am super proud of our kids and how they executed the game plan."
