The Argentinian Football Association (AFA) has strongly rejected a report that its leadership has been personally subpoenaed as part of US investigations into its financial dealings.
The newspaper Infobae also reported, citing a document from US authorities, that FBI agents had stopped federation president Claudio Tapia at John F. Kennedy Airport in New York and seized electronic devices from him and other members of the AFA delegation.
Argentina lost the World Cup final to Spain in nearby New Jersey on Sunday.
AFA communications chief Nicolás Novello described the reporting, in response to a dpa enquiry, as a "huge lie" late on Wednesday. The FBI said it was unable to comment on the matter.
The AFA said the document mentioned by Infobae was not addressed to its leadership.
According to reports in Argentinian media, US authorities are investigating the association's financial dealings in the United States.
Investigators are said to be examining, among other issues, how hundreds of millions of dollars were processed through the US financial system and whether US law may have been violated.
In Argentina, investigators are examining allegations that the federation was late paying its taxes and social security contributions. Tapia appeared in court in March in connection with the case.
Tapia, in charge of the AFA since 2017, wrote on Instagram on Wednesday: "Do not let yourselves be deceived (...) either by lies or by manoeuvres that are only aimed at stirring up agitation."
