Hall of Famer
Sometimes you have to bite the bullet and get your franchise quarterback if you have the chance. Sure you don't get immediate results, but really what results have we gotten by constantly trying to fill other holes. Sure Terrell Suggs would be a monster addition and if we get him we will be better for it, but isn't it time to go get a guy who everyone (Leftwich) agrees is a great player at the most important position on the field. There were a ton of folks who questioned why we blew a first round supplemental pick on Tim Rosenbach and there were as many who questioned if Jake Plummer would ever be more than just a scrambling quarterback, but no one who watches Leftwich leaves disappointed. He is the classic, big armed leader who comes along only so often.
I wish I had a dollar for everyone of you on this board who bellyached last season about our quarterback situation. Sure we were all pissed that we couldn't get to the quarterback on defense, but the % of posts arguing that we need a new quarterback easily was 4 to 1 compared to the need a new pash rusher.
Why did we have so many posts about wanting a new quarterback? Because we are all educated football fans and see the absolute need to fix this mess. Is Jeff Blake the bandaid for our quarterback woes? 12 years of mediocrity and 4 different teams makes me a little uneasy that he is. Is Blake better than Plummer? Yeah, but that doesn't take much to be better than Plummer. Is Blake the guy to get us to the Super Bowl? A big emphatic no!! Is Josh McCown that answer? Use your own eyes and your own judgement folks. The arguement has always been that Marcel Shipp stood out the very first day he donned a Cardinal uniform. Did anyone who saw McCown at training camp leave thinking you were seeing a future great quarterback? No, in fact most were more impressed with the undrafted rookie (Parsons).
When was the last time a team picking 6th had a shot at a legit franchise quarterback? Its been a long, long time. Where would Leftwich have been picked back in 1999? Any bets he would have been the #1 overall pick instead of Tim Couch? How about last year? His credentials are every bit as good as either David Carr or Joey Harrington. How about 1998? Anyone think Leftwich would have been right up there with Ryan Leaf?
This is my last pro Leftwich post. I promise.
