The Buffalo Bills experienced another postseason heartbreak and a Division round postseason exit in 2025. The 33 points they gave up against their own 30 means their defense has yet again come under the offseason microscope.

During former head coach Sean McDermott's tenure, their defense and special teams were not able to get critical stops and defend the run. With a new head coach and new coordinators across all three phases, a new regime will try its hand to help the league's top scoring offense close out games.

For the second offseason in a row, GM Brandon Beane has added talent by way of the NFL Draft and free agency to do just that.

While we await the results of those moves, here are three reasons why the Bills' defense will improve in 2026:

Improved Health

The Bills get back several defensive players from the 2025 rookie class who missed much of their rookie seasons, and the development that comes with them, due to injury.

Those players are returning, having put on some muscle and improved their conditioning in their offseason programs.

Buffalo also added a fresh surplus of new, young talent on that side of the ball to fill out their positional rotations and depth chart. Factor in the trends of recent offseasons in the types of game-impacting and immediate contributor qualities Beane's looked for as he's reconstructed the roster and payroll with cost-controlled talent, and the defense could be in for a better year.

Then there's the biggest development of all- a whole new defensive scheme and coordination by recently hired DC Jim Leonhard. A healthy roster and rotation that can share the workload throughout a 17-game season and the playoffs, paired with Leonhard's 3-4 base, could add up to some big improvements on defense.

Disruptors

Buffalo added star pass rusher Bradley Chubb and has some players on defense who can be disruptive, hit hard, and blow up plays. And they've added similar players to those ranks in recent offseasons. The new look Bills defense has the tools and potential to be a problem for opponents.

Greg Rousseau, Landon Jackson, and Michael Hoecht, Ed Oliver, DeWayne Carter, Deone Walker, TJ Sanders, Zane Durant, Terrel Bernard, Dorian Williams, TJ Parker, and Kaleb Elarms-Orr all fit a disruptive profile for opposing offenses to go up against. They can all blow up plays in the pocket, at the line, and right behind them in coverage.

The likes of Christian Benford, Maxwell Hairston, Cole Bishop, Dee Alford, Jordan Hancock, Davison Igbinosun, and Toriano Pride Jr. will be disrupting opponents' passing games.

The new defensive game plan can let them play more freely and could maximise their disruptive traits

If the Bills' defensive roster remains healthy and pays effectively, it will create an immersive defensive coverage for opponents that may prove difficult to cut through, get over, or find their way around.

If the scheme works, it can create the pressure and traffic that makes life difficult for the other team's quarterback.

It's less easy to make plays and keep offensive drives alive when pockets are collapsing, gaps and run lanes are closed, and passing targets are covered.

Time will tell if the defensive woes have been remedied, but the formula does appear to be there for Buffalo.
