It is never too early to begin watching prospects for the 2026 NFL Draft. General manager Jason Licht has made the draft the key cog in the machine for the Buccaneers in terms of roster building and transforming the team itself.
We are going to be covering every position in the draft. Not all of them will be immediate needs for Tampa Bay, but depth, role players, and future contract decisions always shape how the board looks on draft weekend.
For this report, we will be discussing an edge defender. While the Buccaneers have invested in their defensive front in recent years, edge depth and rotational pass rushers remain areas constantly evaluated, especially given the physical toll the position takes over a full season.
With that in mind, here is our report on Florida edge defender George Gumbs Jr.
George Gumbs Jr. took a unique path to the SEC, beginning his college career at Northern Illinois before transferring to Florida. He originally entered college as a tight end before transitioning to defense, a move that shows up clearly in his comfort operating in space and his effort in pursuit.
After arriving in Gainesville, Gumbs steadily carved out a role and eventually became a full-time starter along the edge. He earned his bachelor’s degree in Education Sciences and was named to the SEC Fall Academic Honor Roll, adding strong off-field credentials to his profile.
George Gumbs Jr. projects as a developmental edge defender with a clear NFL role against the run and on early downs. His background as a former offensive player shows up in his body control and awareness, particularly when diagnosing blocking schemes and staying square to the line of scrimmage.
While he is not a pure speed rusher, Gumbs wins with effort, leverage, and physicality. His best work comes when he is asked to anchor the edge, spill runs back inside, and collapse the pocket rather than bend around it.
