Former Florida edge defender George Gumbs Jr. was one of the surprise invites to the NFL combine this year, but he put on a show that many NFL teams will remember when picking in the late rounds of the draft in April.
Gumbs' 6.14 grade ranks 20th at his position, but his measurables weren't anything to scoff at. His 41-inch vertical jump is the second-best among defensive ends and edge defenders all time, coming half an inch shy of Nolan Smith's 2023 record.
While a 4.66-second 40-yard dash isn't anything too special, he was one of only two participants in the 3-cone drill at his position. His 7-second time showed off his short-burst ability.
NFL NextGen Stats gave Gumbs a production score of 58, which ranks 32nd among defensive ends and edge defenders, but his athleticism score of 75 ranks eighth. Combining the two, his total score of 63 ranks 26th.
Although he entered the combine as a projected undrafted free agent, Gumbs may have shown enough to warrant a Day 3 pick. His ceiling is high, and he's coachable as an edge rusher. Remember, Gumbs started his college career as a walk-on wideout at Northern Illinois, so there's still plenty to learn for him to reach his full potential.
Gumbs did not participate in the 20-yard shuttle or bench press.
