my official one game scouting report on this years QB class:

BAD.

Mendoza is probably the best. He goes #1 to the QB needy team.

but after that...

Ty Simpson looks like Mac Jones to me. Good processor, but (probably) below average NFL arm strength and the accuracy comes and goes. the Brock Purdy experience probably gets him drafted top 5 but likely TEMU Kirk Cousins.

John Mateer of Oklahoma -- kind of a sling-y low throwing motion (comes out low), accuracy looked all over the place and a lack of touch.

LaNorris Sellers-- no where near an NFL passer.

finally: Sam Leavitt. you love his athleticism and fearlessness (not just running, but taking hits to deliver passes) but its resulted in him missing time. An NFL team can rein in that part of his game, but what are you left with after that?
I think Simpson has a better arm than he’s shown. I worried when Mateer couldn’t get the Hail Mary to the end zone.

Sellers is a 2 year project, but he’ll start an NFL game at some point.

Agree on Simpson’s arm. He’s got better than adequate velocity. My issue with him is experience. Guys like JJ McCarthy, Mac Jones and Mark Sanchez were high draft picks after starting one year in college and were notoriously underwhelming in the pros.

Sellers needs to transfer to Miami or Georgia next year. If not he needs to sit for a year or two in the pros.

Who fits this? If Mendoza wins 3 more games, he's the only top prospect to get close to this. He's a junior.

Btw, Clayton Tune was just outside this. Only a starter for 2 full years. Hit the rest.

I’m curious if this has been backtested.

Didn't we end up with Jonah Williams with that strategy?
iirc: Wasnt Jonah a kinda 2nd wave of UFA signing?

i wonder if the knee injuries last year have cost him some quickness

I agree with your worry, GAZ. It is actually one of my personal rules when evaluating college QB’s that they need to have started more than just one season. It is also the reason why I want no part of Dante Moore in this draft, if he comes out.

However, I will break my rule with Ty Simpson. He is just different, I think. Maybe it is because he has been in a pro style program and system for three years prior to this season, maybe it is because he have learned behind college stars like Bryce Young and Jalen Milroe, or maybe it is because he is a very mature guy (a five-star recruit that turn down multiple NIL-offers from rival schools? Unheard of in 2025), but again, the point is that he is just different than other similar quarterbacks. And obviously, he is also playing very well and shows many QB-skills that starting NFL QBs struggle with.

I think that Simpson is worth #1 overall pick, and if not, I would be very, very excited to have him as a replacement for Murray next season.

As of right now, and of course subject to change, mid to top of round 1 is looking like value/BPA at QB, WR, OT, and EDGE. (CB as well but we have invested enough there)

I think one of the keys for Simpson will be how he measures. he's listed at 6'2" 208 but like Sayin most people don't think he's as tall as listed.

CBS has a mock draft up now that has Simpson going first, Dante Moore second and Mendoza third and it has us taking a kid I mentioned before Makai Lemon from USC at Wr. But I mentioned him as a 2nd rounder, still prefer the ex USC WR now at Georgia Zachariah Branch but I have him more like a 3rd rounder. But CBS now has Lemon going in the top 10 picks which is a huge surprise to me I don't think he's fast enough to go that high. But I really do like him, tough kid good after the catch, seems to have good hands but I wouldn't have thought he was even a 1st rounder let alone top 10 pick.

And like most I suspect we're going to be picking a QB.

I also will repeat I think Mac Jones is the odds on favorite to be our starter next year. Not saying I like him or that's the guy I want, just I think we'll go that route even if we draft a QB in the first round

ESPN has the Colts ranked #1, and IMO, that is because of their RB. He made the QB and the team better. I do know that most Draft pundits say, No RB with a High 1st round pick. But, they can make a difference.

I don't think Mendoza or Nussmeier will be any good.
Sellers has chance down the road. Haven't seen enough of Moore but not impressed with what I saw.

Simpson is probably the best but that might be like being the prettiest ugly girl.

The intriguing one is Carson Beck. Sure he had a bad game but he has all the tools.
He was considered a lock for the #1 pick before everything went sour at Georgia.

He has the talent and measurables. But definitely question marks too.

Carson Bleh. Looks like a serviceable backup to me.
