Michael Porter Jr was one of the projected "Top 5" prospects and will now miss the next 3-4 months after undergoing surgery on his back/spine. You have to wonder if he'll return to college for another year or take his chances going pro. I can't see him being a top 5 selection unless he returns and dominates in the tournament but I think that's highly unlikely. Playing another year in college shouldn't hurt and he may end up being the #1 pick in the 2019 draft if he has a strong showing during his sophomore season.

If he still goes top ten, he should go. Bird in the hand. The difference in the salary between the 1 and 10 picks over four years is about $15 million, but he also loses a year of pro earnings by staying in school.

Back injury requiring surgery is a big blow. Worse than a leg injury. I feel bad for the kid. I wonder how far he’ll drop in the draft. I think I’d advise against coming back for a second year with the threat of injury and likely expensive insurance due to his current injury.

This type surgery, as mentioned in the link above, can be a concern.

Missouri said Porter will have a microdiscectomy of his L3-L4 spinal disks. The school said that the projected recovery time is three to four months and that Porter is expected to make a complete recovery.

There is a reason they do this surgery.

I'd go the other way it makes him more likely to leave and get a guaranteed contract in case it becomes a chronic problem later on. He has plenty of time to figure out where he is health wise to decide but if he's healthy enough to do the workouts and pass the physicals I bet he leaves.

I guess the counter is it's possible his brother Johntay stays for his soph year and if he does maybe that's enough to get Michael to stay.

I highly doubt he'll go top 5 in this class but stranger things have happened. If his health checks out he should be a lottery pick still but the question will be how far he falls. I like this for the Suns because it means he might be on the board for them if they don't have a top 5 pick.

as a veteran of a micro-diskectomy, it always sounds INSANE to me when people give high impact athletes a 3 months recovery period. I mean, yeah, you might be done with your insurance alloted amount of rehab by then, but 3 months is a joke for someone to be running, jumping and banging bodies with 200 pounder defenders three times a week.

I know a person who had the surgery. Although much improved, the back issue lingers. I wonder if playing sports has an impact.

Ayton will never be a defensive juggernaut but if he gave effort on that side of the ball he might be the GOAT prospect. Not sure if Miller is too easy on him or he's just not wired that way. With his size and ability he could dominate all aspects of the game.

The crop of bigs this year is nuts. Brandon McCoy has looked great as well.
