This week, former Pittsburgh Steelers cornerback Joe Haden brought to light a part of former head coach Mike Tomlin's style that most of the fanbase already understood. Many players said Tomlin was the kind of coach who could make you run through a wall but was also a coach who showed clear favoritism to certain players.
There's no example better of this than former Steelers wide receiver Antonio Brown during the team's 2016 training camp.
As everyone knows, when the Steelers hold training camp, they do so at Saint Vincent College. One of the traditions is for the team to stay in the dorms. The walk in videos and pictures at Latrobe are great seeing all the guys show up with their favorite pillows, game systems and suitcases. But there are always a few faces that we never see or only show up briefly.
In 2016, Brown showed up to Saint Vincent College in a galaxy themed Rolls Royce with his private Chef Niko along for the ride. A flamboyant entrance was nothing new but it was everything after that really illustrated just how much Tomlin turned a blind eye. Brown and his family rented a home near campus instead of having Brown stay on campus. This on its own isn't ideal but Brown decided to chronicle his time at the rental on social media, just throwing it in Tomlin's face that he doesn't have to follow the rules, and nothing was done about it. Browns chef brought even more negative attention to him during the training camp when he parked Brown's Rolls Royce in an handicap parking spot at a local restaurant and then went on a tirade on social media about being criticized for it.
Tomlin rarely got the best out of guys like Brown because there was no pressure on them to lead and perform. This is part of why Tomlin's Steelers teams has so much talent on paper but constantly lost games they should have won, knowing their head coach would protect their poor effort to the media.
