The draft starts tomorrow and the D'backs have the number 1 pick. Any ideas on who they should take? There doesn't seem to be a consensus #1 pick this year.

I don't think there is any lock at #1. I've read Rodgers may not be on their radar and that they might go for an easy sign player (BA has ARZ taking GA prep C Tyler Stephenson) and save the slot bonus money for players in later rounds.

Options I prefer for #1
Carson Fulmer
Dansby Swanson
Alex Bregman

I keep on hearing/reading about people in the know pointing towards Tyler Stephenson being the guy. My bet is on him or Swanson.

it's gonna be Swanson. I'm ok with that. He's a fiery competitor, something we completely lack.

Hope not on C Stephenson as that would be going for need not BPA. Swanson would be my choice.

So if you're Diamondbacks scouting director Deric Ladnier, whom are you taking with the No. 1 overall pick?

CC: It's close, but I'm taking Brendan Rodgers (SS, Lake Mary HS, Fla.). He's the most talented player in the class -- not including Aiken -- and a shortstop who has a chance to hit for both average and power is a rare commodity that I can't pass on.

EOB: What separates him from Dansby Swanson (SS, Vanderbilt) and Alex Bregman (SS, LSU) in your mind?

CC: Two different -- but important factors at play: 1. He's got much more offensive firepower than Swanson, who I believe is more of a 60-45 player as compared to the potential 60-60 you could get from Rodgers. And with Bregman, it's the likelihood that he'll play shortstop. As much as he's improved there, I still think there's a pretty solid chance Bregman spends most of his career on the other side of second base. The bat plays at either position, but of course I'd rather have the shortstop.

Haven't our Phoenix Suns proved that going for BPA is not preferable to going for need?

By its own definition, the word 'need' is stronger than 'available'.

: NEED= : a situation in which someone or something must do or have something

: something that a person must have : something that is needed in order to live or succeed or be happy

: a strong feeling that you must have or do something

: AVAILABLE= : easy or possible to get or use

: present or ready for use

I have no idea what your point is here...
Go for the Catcher. One who can perform well both behind the plate and alongside it is our greatest need, other than an ace to lead the starting staff, and that is not going to come from this year's draft.

At the first pick overall, I say you got to go best available. A high school catcher will probably not be ready to contribute until 2018 at the very earliest. Hopefully the catching situation will be resolved by then and who knows what needs we will have. Dansby Swanson or Brendan Rodgers seem to be the top position players available. Of the two, I would go with Dansby Swanson based on the name alone. :D

You forgot the words BP in front of Available. They stand for Best Player. The DBacks with the first pick can take the Best Player in the draft which many feel is Dansby Swanson. Catcher Tyler Stephenson is ranked in the top 15. Huge difference but that is just my two cents.

I don't think I'm the first to say this but I'm being told the Dbacks will take Dansby Swanson.

UPDATE:

Vanderbilt shortstop Dansby Swanson, the pre-draft favorite, has been selected No. 1 overall by the Arizona Diamondbacks in the 2015 MLB draft.
