The Shutdown Five: Most interesting starting quarterback battles

By MJD

http://sports.yahoo.com/nfl/blog/sh...-Most-interesting-starting-qua?urn=nfl,167265

4. San Francisco 49ers: Shaun Hill(notes) vs. Alex Smith. Much like Quinn in Cleveland, it seems like Hill is the leader in the clubhouse here. It seems that way because he's competing against Alex Smith.
Hill went 5-3 as a starter last season while Smith sat the year out with a shoulder injury. Before that, he was widely regarded as a colossal draft bust with small hands a not-so-bright future. I'm not sure I buy that, though, as guys don't get drafted first overall without some physical tools. Smith is probably the underdog in the competition right now, but I'd love to see him win it and have a productive year. That would make for an outstanding redemption story.

Staley has signed a six year extension

Hopefully Patrick Willis extension is next.

Staley, according to the source, will not receive a signing bonus. Signing bonuses are prorated for the life of a contract for salary-cap purposes. Instead, Staley will receive two roster bonuses, which count immediately against that year's cap.

Some of the other details of the contract are interesting. Staley, according to the source, will not receive a signing bonus. Signing bonuses are prorated for the life of a contract for salary-cap purposes. Instead, Staley will receive two roster bonuses, which count immediately against that year's cap.

The reason the 49ers would structure the deal in that way is because they have an abundance of salary-cap space. The 49ers were approximately $25 million under the cap before the Staley extension. Staley's 2009 cap figure, with this new deal, rises from $1.42 million to $11.6 million.

Staley is signed for nine more seasons. A lot of times when a player gets a big paycheck early in the contract, he grows frustrated that the yearly salaries are not as high on the back end. In recent years, there have been several Philadelphia Eagles who grew frustrated with back ends of their long-term deals, including Brian Westbrook, Sheldon Brown and Lito Sheppard.

It can reasonably be assumed that the 49ers took measures to avoid that kind of potential future discontent with Staley. (Chief negotiator Paraag Marathe declined comment through a club spokesman.)

All of Staley's bonus money is heavily deferred. Although the guaranteed bonus money will count immediately against the cap, Staley will keep getting checks for a long time. Because he will continue to receive that money through the years, perhaps there will be less reason for Staley to be discontent with his yearly income.

General manager Scot McCloughan was on Sirius NFL radio this morning. What McCloughan said then, and what he reiterated to me later at the team's OTA practice today, is that Alex Smith is throwing the ball better than he has since joining the 49ers. Not, "He's throwing the ball better than he has since separating his throwing shoulder," but "He's better than he's ever been as an NFL quarterback." That's a big statement and one that ought to bolster Smith's ever-growing confidence.
Smith indeed has looked impressive over the last couple of weeks. He throws a tight spiral and his accuracy seems to get a little better with every practice.

The Vick comment makes me happy:rockon:
The Alex Smith comment makes me.:thumbdown

A day after sprinting for the first time, Michael Crabtree continued to test out his surgically repaired foot

Shawn Hill= Starting QB
Alex Smith= Backup QB

Why is it so hard for your F.O. and coaches to figure that out? :mulli:

I don't know exactly.
One thing that might discourage the coaches on shaun hill, is that he looks bad during practice, while Smith looks good during practice.

In games Hill makes 4ty9er fans...Do this-->:rockon::fans::thewave::beer::cheers:

while Alex Smith makes 4ty9erfans....Do this -->:mad::bang::barf::pullhair::billthecat::soapbox::computer::madarms::(

As far as your WRs go, how do you see that playing out?

The way I see it it will be Bruce and Crabtree starting and Morgan coming off of the bench and being used on passing downs.

I see it going something like this:
Morgan
Bruce

Bench
Jason Hill
Crabtree
Jones

Morgan was a 6th round draft pick in 08, while Crabtree was the 10th pick in this draft. Why Morgan over Crabtree? :mulli:

Morgan is more experienced than Crabtree.
Morgan is a little bit more polished (at this point) than Crabtree.
Morgan knows the play book better than Crabtree (right now)
Morgan is practicing, Crabtree is not.
:slap::D

I'm expecting half way through the season we will see a line up of Morgan and Crabtree. Morgan is learning both the Y and Z position.

OK, that's all fine and dandy, but Bruce is a HOFer so unless there is something wrong with him and Mogan or Crabtree prove otherwise Bruce is your #1 WR and should be throughout the season. ;)

Maybe he will. Maybe he doesn't want to get beat down and swept by the Cardinals again this year? :p

A couple of hours ago on NFL Live a reporter reported "that the 49ers aren't expecting a big splash from Crabtree in his rookie due (to his foot and missing time) they would love for it to happen, but no. They expect him to be a big piece of the offense in his second year.

Well, you knda asked for that. :p

I hope he doesn't decide to retire. Has he been practicing with the team? There's probably two Whiners I currently like and he's one (Shaun Hill the other).

Morgan also had three touchdown catches. Only one rookie wide receiver, Denver's Eddie Royal with five, had more.
And now?

"I had my own personal assistant," Morgan said. "That's how lost I was."
This year, he is in the running for the starting job opposite Isaac Bruce, his mentor. But Coach Mike Singletary is fond of saying that every position is open for competition, so Morgan will have to fend off free-agent acquisition Brandon Jones, first-round pick Michael Crabtree and holdovers such as Jason Hill.
"My first goal is just to stay healthy," Morgan said. "That's the most important thing. If I do that, I feel like I can at least double my performance from last year. I can be twice as good."
