Over the past several months, many sports leagues and competitions throughout the United States have celebrated the 250th anniversary of the United States with USA 250 patches on their uniforms. However, that was not the case for the WNBA All-Star Game over the weekend, and fans were not happy about it.
Despite a previous report that indicated that the league planned ot put commemorative USA 250 patches on the jerseys for the All-Star Game, no such patches were included, sparking outrage from some fans.
No Patches on Jerseys
Back in June, Sportico reported that the WNBA planned to have the commemorative patches on its jerseys for the All-Star Game. However, it seems that those plans have changed.
The decision comes after Las Vegas Aces forward Brianna Turner, treasurer of the WNBPA, voiced her displeasure at the idea of wearing the patches, considering more than 70% of the league is made up of Black women.
“The irony of all the USA 250 stuff is that the vast majority of people in America today would not have been ‘free’ 250 years ago,” Turner wrote in a post on X back on June 4. “Whoever called for the WNBA all star uniforms to have the USA 250 patch should have thought that through considering no WNBA players would have been free 250 years ago. The majority wouldn’t even have their freedom 100 years ago.”
“We are some of the most elite female athletes,” Turner added in a follow-up post. “250 years ago we would have been breeders or in the fields working all day. Be so serious rn.”
While USA Today notes that no player had refused to wear the patch, the league decided not to include the patch on the jerseys.
“As a league, your representation of everyone in the league is really important,” Minnesota Lynx coach Cheryl Reeve said. ” You’re certainly not gonna please everyone. As we know, politics, it’s a viewpoint. We all have different viewpoints. It is the 250th year of our country. It is a large celebration. I think the undertones are always going to be there, but this is a height of time. We’re in league that’s always taken on issues. That’s not going to change. And I don’t think it should change. But I think the league has to lead with the idea of everyone in mind. And I think that can be a really difficult balancing act.”
Decision Sparks Outrage
Needless to say, the decision to go without the patches quickly sparked outrage on social media.
“When we tell you the WNBA hates America, you don’t have to take our word for it anymore,” T.J. Moe of Fearless wrote in a post.
“I would ask people to boycott the WNBA, but I have no idea who watches it,” actor Matthew Marsden wrote in a post.
“Shameful,” NY Post columnist Richie Greenberg wrote in a post.
“The WNBA disrespected America tonight by refusing to wear the USA 250 patch on their All-Star jerseys… WNBPA Treasurer Brianna Turner said the patches shouldn’t be worn because ‘No WNBA players would have been free 250 years ago.’ They’re the only major American sports league to refuse to wear the patches,” Jon Root of OutKick wrote.
“What a bunch of libwitted jerks,” author Dennis Kneale wrote.
“Let’s hope that Brianna Turner or any other players who agree with this short-sighted WNPBA blunder never wind up in a situation like Brittney Griner and need the good ole’ stars and bars to come to their rescue! Another issue Adam Silver should step in to correct,” Rep. Marlin Stutzman wrote in a post on X.
Clearly, fans and members of the media were not happy about the move.
