The Indiana Fever won its fourth consecutive game on Tuesday night after defeating the Seattle Storm 105-95 on the road. Superstar Caitlin Clark had another dominant showing, scoring 32 points and dishing seven assists.
Clark’s friend and teammate, Sophie Cunningham, had a strong showing as well, scoring 11 points off the bench on 3-for-6 shooting from the field. However, the discourse surrounding Cunningham, both leading up to the game and after it, was not centered around her play on the court.
ESPN published a feature last week where Cunningham touched on the hot-button topic of transgender athletes’ participation in sports.
“I got a lot of negative feedback about me hating trans. And I’m like, ‘I never once said that,'” she said. “I think that I am here to extend love. But I also think with that love is truth, being honest. And I want to protect young girls in a locker room, or young girls in sport who shouldn’t have to go against biological men.”
“I’ve never been yelled at like that.”
Cunningham’s comments led to a show of support from several fans before Tuesday’s game, with a rally being organized in support of her outside of the Storm’s home arena. However, two young Cunningham fans had a rough experience inside Climate Pledge Arena.
The young fans spoke with Brandi Kruse about their experience being yelled at, cursed at, and reduced to tears by who Kruse claims was Seattle Storm co-owner Celeste Keaton.
“Well, we were just sitting there with our signs that said like, ‘We love Sophie,’ like, ‘Thank you Sophie for speaking up,'” one of the young girls told Kruse, “and so we were holding on, just watching the game, again, like, we were being super great, we hadn’t said anything to anyone else, we were being super respectful, we were just holding our signs and cheering for both teams, and this lady (Keaton) comes up to us.”
The fan then alleges that Keaton started berating and cursing at her, reducing her to tears.
“Yeah, I’ve never been yelled at like that. I mean, I’ve had people hate me on the internet, but like it doesn’t really affect me as much because it’s just people online,” she said. “But that just took me by surprise because I thought she was going to be nice and then she starts like screaming at us and cussing at us.”
“Where are the parents?”
Fans on social media who agree with Cunningham and the young fans were incensed with their treatment at the game.
“I hope (the source is lying) because if not, this should be criminal,” one fan posted on X about the situation.
“Where are the girls parents, no one and I mean no one would be allowed to talk to my child that way. They should sue,” someone else wrote.
“Way to go, @seattlestorm! Making a girl cry when she won’t subscribe to your insanity. I (hope you’re) proud of yourself and your ownership group,” another fan added.
“The Seattle Storm owner should be reprimanded for showing hate towards these girls. They were not disrupting anything and simply there to support Sophie,” one person wrote.
Kruse maintains that she tried to get arena security involved to address the situation, but was instructed to contact the front office.
