Indiana Fever guard Sophie Cunningham was at the center of attention in the WNBA world last week when she made comments about trans athletes to ESPN's Hallie Grossman.
"I got a lot of negative feedback about me hating trans. And I'm like, 'I never once said that,'" she told the site. "I think that I am here to extend love. But I also think with that love is truth, being honest. And I want to protect young girls in a locker room, or young girls in sport who shouldn't have to go against biological men."
With that in mind, the Seattle Storm posted a photo on Tuesday night before their matchup against Cunningham's Fever showing center Stefanie Dolson wearing a shirt before the contest with these words printed on it: "Trans rights are human rights."
Was that a deliberate response to Cunningham, given that she was about to play against the Fever vet? It's also possible that Dolson was responding not directly to Cunningham, but to make a statement in response to a rally outside of the Storm's home court at Climate Pledge Arena.
A group gathered there before the game in support of Cunningham and a Washington state ballot measure that would prohibit transgender athletes from participating in girls' athletics.
There's been no word from Dolson or the Storm beyond the three "shouting" emojis the franchise's X (formerly Twitter) admin added, so it seems like everyone is letting the shirt speak for itself for now.
For The Win reached out to the Storm for comment on Dolson's shirt. We'll update this post if we hear back.
