Another year, another San Francisco 49ers player suffering a serious injury that knocks them out for a full season. So, what’s new?
Aside from the 49ers now needing a replacement for Ricky Pearsall, whom they’ve already found by signing Deebo Samuel, injuries are something this franchise has been forced to deal with several times.
NFL World Reacts to Ricky Pearsall’s Season-Ending Injury
In fact, injuries have become so frequent that some can’t help but wonder whether the 49ers are cursed.
“This gotta be the most cursed franchise I’ve ever seen man. They have a season ending injury every year man.”
SI’s Grant Cohn didn’t need any time to absorb the information and was quick to offer his insight on the 49ers’ latest season-ending injury.
“Instant reaction to the 49ers shutting down Ricky Pearsall for the year.”
Former NFL QB Chase Daniel called the injury “absolutely devastating” for the 49ers.
“Absolutely devastating….49ers HAVE to stay healthy.”
Another commenter added that Pearsall “really can’t catch a break.”
“He really can’t catch a break. Hate to see it.”
Another analyst suggested that the 49ers seemed to know Pearsall’s diagnosis was headed in this direction, which is why they added Samuel in free agency days ago.
“Seemed pretty like this update was coming once Deebo signed. The Deebo-Pearsall swap is probably a good thing for Stribling, as Deebo is the more likely of the two to get usurped for the WR2 role,” they wrote.
“Also probably a plus for Mike Evans on the somewhat off chance that Ricky was going to take a big leap and lead the team in targets, or challenge Evans for that. As for Pearsall, the outcome where he returns and becomes a high-end fantasy asset in 2027 and on seems quite thin. Will be 27 years old with less than 1k career yards and just 67 total receptions,” their post read.
One X user said what everyone else was thinking: that “injuries are the worst.”
“Holy crap man. Has every tool but just can’t stay healthy. Injuries are [the] worst.”
Another acknowledged that the 49ers have also partially been prepared for potential further injury by selecting receiver De’Zhaun Stribling in the second round of the 2026 NFL Draft. Stribling will likely now have more opportunities in his debut season.
“Absolutely insane turn of events for Ricky who came into camp at “100%”. I know there has been a lot of discourse, but De’Zhaun Stribling should have sizable route share entering week 1 and I believe has the tools to succeed in the Shanahan offense.”
One NFL analyst, Emmanuel Acho, hinted at the 49ers’ mishandling ofthe situation.

“Here’s what I don’t understand – If Pearsall’s “nagging injury” dates back to last yr, why didn’t they treat it or do extensive pre-rehab in the off-season. There have been four months where they could’ve aggressively addressed this Injury. Instead, Pearsall will miss all of 2026.”
While the 49ers’ medical approach to treating Pearsall’s injury can be questioned, there’s nothing anyone can do about the former first-round pick being ruled out for the season now.
