The San Francisco 49ers on Saturday placed wide receiver Ricky Pearsall on season-ending injured reserve. General manager John Lynch told reporters Pearsall will have surgery on his injured PCL and that the timeline for his recovery is six-to-12 months.
By placing Pearsall on IR before final cuts and not assigning a return designation for him the 49ers ensured the third-year WR's season was over. The recovery timeline for him would've likely ended his season anyway. Even if Pearsall had a six-month recovery that still puts him out until February, which is when the Super Bowl would be. Lynch indicated nine months is closer to what the team is circling according to ESPN's Nick Wagoner.
A nine-month recovery would put Pearsall back in action by April of next year, which would put him in line to participate in the offseason program which begins in May. By having surgery early in training camp he will have nearly a full year to recover and get close to full strength.
Next season will be a vital one for Pearsall. It's his fourth season and the 49ers will likely not pick up his fifth-year option next offseason. That would make the 2027 season a contract year for Pearsall. If he comes back healthy and plays at the level he played through his first two seasons it would re-insert him into the long-term conversation for the 49ers' receiving corps. If he struggles in his return it could mean a change of scenery is in the cards.
Pearsall, the No. 31 overall pick in the 2024 draft has played in 20 games with 13 starts across his first two seasons. He reeled in 67 receptions for 928 yards and three touchdowns.
For now, the hope is that he recovers on the shorter end of his six-to-12 month window and is back to full strength for OTAs next year. Once he's back on the field we can dive into exactly what his long-term fit with the 49ers is.
