Caitlin Clark is often the reason why the Indiana Fever win games. But on Thursday night, she was one of the main reasons why the team lost, and she knows it.
A couple of uncharacteristic errors from Clark late in Thursday night’s 86-84 overtime loss to the Las Vegas Aces ultimately cost the Fever the game, and Clark openly admitted it after the game.
Clark’s Mistakes
While Clark finished the game with 20 points and eight assists, it was not a particularly good game from the Fever star as she finished with eight turnovers and shot just 7-for-20 from the field, including 2-of-10 from three-point range.
However, it was her late-game miscues that truly sank the Fever’s chances on Thursday night.
With seven seconds left in regulation and the Fever up by three points, Clark had a chance to essentially clinch the game with two free throws – one of which would have given the Fever a two-possession lead with just seconds remaining. Instead, Clark, who shoots 87.9% from the free-throw line for her career, missed both free throws, allowing for Aces guard Chelsea Gray to send the game to overtime with a buzzer-beater.
In overtime, Clark made another costly mistake that essentially cost her team the game.
With just over 10 seconds remaining on the clock and five seconds remaining on the shot clock, Clark had the ball and found herself matched up with Aces star A’Ja Wilson with the Fever leading by a score of 84-83.
A basket would have essentially clinched the game for the Fever. At the very least, running five more seconds off the clock would have made a comeback much more difficult for the Aces. Instead, Clark turned the ball over, allowing Gray to hit a second buzzer-beater to win the game.
‘Cost my team the game’
After the game, Clark was quick to take accountability for her mistakes, admitting that she ultimately cost her team the game with her late-game miscues.
“Obviously, that just can’t happen. Those are free throws I usually make. Certainly frustrating,” Clark said during the postgame press conference. “Obviously, one of them gives us a two-possession lead. Kind of cost my team there for sure, so that’s on me.”
Clark explained that the Fever allowed the Aces to get back into the game a bit in the second half, but they ultimately still put themselves in a position to win late in the contest, and she let them down.
“We put ourselves in a position to win the game, and honestly it was me who made costly errors for us,” Clark admitted. “It’s on me to help us win. That’s my job; that’s what I get paid to do.”
