United States President Donald Trump has loomed large over the 2026 FIFA World Cup, especially after his controversial involvement in FIFA’s decision to overturn the red card suspension for USMNT striker Folarin Balogun. However, it seems like one international soccer superstar has a good relationship with Trump.
Earlier this week, Trump shared that he had previously played golf with England captain Harry Kane, saying, “I like him a lot.” On Friday, Kane confirmed the outing while offering several complimentary remarks about the president.
Given Trump’s already controversial nature and his high-profile presence around the World Cup over the past few weeks, Kane’s praise for Trump sparked widespread outrage.
Trump Praises Kane
During a press conference last week, Trump spoke highly of England star striker Harry Kane, revealing that the two had previously played a round of golf together.
“I think Kane is a great player,” Trump told the media during a press conference. “I played golf with him, and I like him a lot. He’s a good golfer, too. He’s really great.”
Trump’s comments came shortly after Kane converted a penalty to help England defeat Mexico in the Round of 16 and advance to the quarterfinals.
Kane Confirms Golfing With Trump
Speaking with reporters on Friday ahead of England’s quarterfinal matchup against Norway on Saturday, Kane confirmed that he had indeed played golf with Trump, describing the occasion as a “surreal experience.”
“We played about 18 months ago,” Kane said on Friday. “He invited me to play when I was down in Palm Beach. When the President invites you somewhere, you know, it was a pretty surreal experience just to meet him and play golf with him.”
Kane also complimented Trump’s skills on the golf course, saying he was especially impressed considering the president’s age.
“His golf is really good, to be honest with you,” Kane said. “I hope I can play golf as good as him when I’m his age, that’s for sure.”
Trump celebrated his 80th birthday last month, with a high-profile UFC event held on the White House lawn as part of the occasion.
Kane later described the round of golf as a “unique experience” and added that he was “grateful that he invited me down to play, for sure.”
Kane Sparks Outrage
Kane’s confirmation of the golf outing, coupled with his flattering comments toward Trump, led to widespread outrage.
“What’s wrong with footballers these days? It’s not even a lack of backbone anymore, some of them are just oddly proud of it. Kane casually talking about playing golf with Trump and calling the whole thing surreal is beyond embarrassing,” prominent sports journalist Leyla Hamed wrote in a post on X.
“I think I’m living in a different reality to everyone else. This is how bad people get into and stay in positions of power when other people (who aren’t bad) choose to go along with whatever they say and ask,” prominent soccer analyst Annemarie Drey wrote.
“Nothing to see here. Just the England captain saying it’s a ‘surreal experience’ meeting the US President that has spent months bombing countless countries and supplying the weapons for a genocide,” journalist Hamza Yusuf wrote in a post on X.
“This is disappointing,” broadcaster Nubaid Haroon wrote in a post on X.
“Very disappointing. Trump’s policy kills people every day,” a prominent Bayern Munich fan account wrote.
Kane and England are set to take on Norway in the quarterfinal of the World Cup on Saturday afternoon.
