Suns sign Heywood Highsmith

I can't wait to see Brooks' influence on Peat. Brooks loves to use his body to create space for his jumper on offense. Peat still has a bit of work to do to perfect his body clearing move. I can just see Peat studying Brooks, or Brooks giving him pointers on those low post banging jumpers and fade aways.

I made a joke about a Ginibili comp for Koa but seriously, I think Manu's approach to attacking the basket would significantly help Peat's game. I know Koa can score through contact, he does it very well. But I want to see him be able to avoid that contact while still being aggressive. Just as long as he doesn't flail and flop like Manu.

Only $1 million of Highsmith's contract is guaranteed so we might see some movement there to shed salary or in trade unless he plays extremely well.

Fleming, Dunn, Peat, Highsmith, Kennard.
The starters are set, and KM/Oso share 26min a game to back up MW.
Gillespie would be the 6th man. Then Ott'd start the season giving Dunn, Fleming, and Peat regular court time to guage their development, and to mix it up with playing time for the vets Goodwin, Highsmith and Kennard to ensure wins.

It seems like the Suns have some older "win now" guys on the roster, but have almost been setting themselves up for life after Booker with the younger players they have been accumulating. Barring any crazy trades that involve the young dudes. We can let some of these contracts play out with the older guys while we continue to add youth over the next couple seasons. It seems like the Suns are trying to walk the tight rope of winning with Book, but developing a team going forward into the future.

My guess would be that if we do not move up to be a contending team in the next two year, and make significant progress in the coming year, that the team will move to trade Book. They will be looking for picks primarily. A team like OKC will be loaded with picks and players and might make a move for a player like Book.

Highsmith is 29 years old, he's competing with Koa and Dunn. He could be here just for mentorship while being a serviceable player? He is the better 3pt shooter of the bunch.

I'm hoping that it's just to let Highsmith find a better opportunity elsewhere (international maybe) or it's to open a spot to convert a two way contract. I'm sure the Ben Simmons, Westbrook rumors will be everywhere though.

I don't really think we're interested. But the rumors are already flying about those guys. And now, we have an opening, so I'm sure our name will be attached to them often.

Just for reference, the league covers $1 million or so of veteran minimum deals, not the team itself, so it counts towards the cap but it saves the owner a little bit of money but that's only for 1 year vet minimum deals and Heywood was on a 2 year, since he had that option. If he clears waivers then we can bring him back and have like 60-70% of his salary covered by the league. So it does make some sense financially when we're talking about guys who aren't difference makers. Get the savings where we can. After Ish lost a bunch of cash recently this is small savings that likely won't effect the team.
