That's almost literally the same plot as the original Night of the Living Dead. In the movie, a guy goes through hell to be the only survivor, only to be shot as he's mistook for a zombie.

I always saw that as a socio political comment even as a kid... damn black man fights his ass off to survive a zombie attack..makes it...then cant survive first contact with an american redneck with a rifle.
