Well it happened. I am a free agent as of yesterday. My last big project either put myself out of a job or my proposal didn’t sit well with upper leadership. Not sure which. Maybe both. I knew what I was doing. I stand by my proposal to try and save jobs. I was specifically told my Leadership position was eliminated due to “AI efficiency cuts”.

I was a VP with no staff managing IT Transformation, Governance and Compliance for our Technology Analytics division. The irony is they begged me to transition to this role which meant giving up my staff. I initially turned it down. Twice. Had I stayed put I likely would have been safe.

I am one of the lucky ones though and have a generous severance package. So, I am going to take some time off, maybe up-skill by taking a couple “Certs” via Coursera. I am also going to take some time to decompress and plan out my next move.

Technically I am still employed for 60 days (non-working moratorium) and then my package kicks in. The only thing I can do is post internally during this moratorium which I have decided not to do. I need something new.

If you hear of any leads in IT or Financial Leadership let me know. Have Operational Leadership Experience (Fraud, Credit Card, Payments, Call Center) or IT Leadership (Technology Transformation, Governance, Product, Program, Project Management, UX/UI Design, Tools Administration, Governance, Vendor Relationship Management, Relationship Management). I would consider individual contributor positions as well. Honestly, I have been in Leadership for a long time and I am not sure I want the stress down the final stretch of my career. However, all things are open.

Sorry to hear that CR. I'll be crossing my fingers for you. If I hear anything, I'll let you know. It does seem like a lot of the remote jobs are starting to dry up, especially management, so not sure how much help I can be here is BFE... er, Texas.

Who needs a human and a microphone when you can outsource the simplest of tasks to artificial intelligence?

For many college students, walking across the graduation stage to receive a diploma is a hallmark moment, a recognition of all the hard work they have put toward a degree. The graduates’ names boom out to the crowd, and just for a moment, the attention is all on them.

But on Friday afternoon, about one hundred Glendale Community College graduates nearly had that moment ripped away from them. Instead of following the time-worn tradition of having an announcer speak each name into a microphone, the school tasked an AI with reading the name of each graduating student as they walked across the stage.

Nearly an hour into the school’s commencement ceremony, it came to a halt due to an apparent — and perhaps predictable — technical difficulty. Dozens of students’ names weren’t called as they walked the stage. Six minutes into the pause, GCC President Tiffany Hernandez approached the podium to address the situation.

“We’re using a new AI system as our reader,” she said with a smile as students began to boo. “That is a lesson learned for us.” Hernandez then attempted to paint a silver lining on the SNAFU. “What we were able to do, though, is that each of you were able to walk the stage and get a picture, which is what I would hope would be the most meaningful.”

The graduating class continued to boo as Hernandez shared that students who walked but weren’t announced would not be able to walk the stage a second time. “You’ve handed over your cards,” Hernandez said, scrunching her nose. “So we won’t be able to do that.” She finished with an apology.

“I’m so sorry,” Hernandez said. “There’s plenty of opportunities, I hope, to take some really good pictures and to celebrate you with your loved ones as well.”

A few minutes later, Hernandez course-corrected. Addressing the crowd, she said, “For those who are standing and would like your names read as you walk the stage, we’re happy to do that.” This time around, the graduates gave their names to a real person, who then read them over the loudspeaker.

The video of the school’s screw-up has gone viral, already inspiring thinkpieces about AI inaccuracies and tech.

“They could have grabbed a child from the audience that could’ve done a better job,” another added. Asked another: “We’re trusting it with jobs, essays, and driving cars but it can’t read a list?”

Some random thoughts on AI.

I was recently searching for new music videos from a favorite artist when I stumbled upon some incredible new clips that turned out to be AI-generated. The simulated voices were uncannily good, so convincing that it was genuinely troublesome to realize they weren't real. What’s even more striking is that these videos are still up on YouTube. I suppose the platform is simply too flooded with this content to catch it all.

Later, I turned on a television program about the virtual reality landscape of the 2040s. It featured a bar scene that really got me thinking about the endless possibilities. And from what I’ve read, we aren't just stopping at screens, they are now creating something akin to hologram AIs.

When you put it all together, it’s already here, or at least right around the corner. And these are just a few examples of how fast things are moving.
