This is a real addiction that we’ve seen even impact stars. I expect the NCAA not to treat it like an illness. Not certain about the NFL and draft eligibility. He might have to start in Canada. Talented player who needs to be more in control of his risky tosses. He might eventually grow into an NFL starter.

Texas Tech QB Brendan Sorsby, who is under NCAA investigation for making bets via a gambling app, has retained the noted lawyer Jeffrey Kessler to try to regain his college eligibility, sources tell me and
@PeteThamel
.

If Sorsby and Kessler are unsuccessful in finding a path to eligibility, declaring for the NFL’s supplemental draft then would become an option. Sorsby would have until June 30 to declare for the supplemental draft.

Texas Tech QB Brendan Sorsby’s camp is essentially doing this, I’m told, to accelerate the process. They want to see if the NCAA will negotiate a settlement on a suspension. If not, Sorsby will likely go into the supplemental draft.

Supplemental draft is usually in early July

IDK. I think the genie is way out of the bottle on this issue and it's impossible to hold on to the old standards. It's far too easy to gamble and it is addictive. When you have somewhere around 1,700 players in the NFL the odds that NONE of them are gambling are zero. Sure most of the bets are tiny, probably, but all it takes is one guy throwing the game and it will stink to high heaven. And we aren't even talking about the refs.

But, I have no idea what can be done about it. You would have to have access to people's phones to control it and that isn't going to happen

well hell, if he declares for the comp draft...toss out a 4th round offer and see what happens.

dont want to invest to high...taking him is a gamble, lol..and a fourth wont stop us from drafting a guy in the first if needed.
4 QB's competing for two spots would be a first in the desert I think..and would make camp pretty heated.
Heck with that, got to do at least a 2nd.

That probably won't be enough, because some good team that knows they will have a low 1st will probably give up their first.

I dunno man..most teams usually bid low in the supplemental...
and gambling is a hard addiction to break...especially when you are competitive.
I dont think I would risk a higher pick..
maybe a third... but beyond that let someone else take the risk if they choose.

It would take a lot of work to get him to NFL level. He needed that year of college. He has to go to Canada.

very curious if rehab happened and then the NCAA investigation, or the other way around

In most cases "rehab" is a reactionary tactic used to try and reduce consequences.
So for your query I would guess investigation came first.

Had the kid just quietly gone to rehab all on his own would the NCAA even know he had an issue??

Unless there is a snitch at the rehab center . But what could they hope to gain? Season tickets?

He bet on games that he could potentially have played in.

I cannot fathom that he will play college football again.

Maybe he learned his lesson but that, as a guy with a high chance to go pro, is insanely stupid.

I suspect he's a ******* idiot.

For persons with addictions, it isn't a matter of intelligence. It is not a disease of choice. As I teach veterans, you must make a choice to get better, but having the disease itself is not a choice.

Absolutely fair.

But how do you balance that going forward?

The NFL, as a league... how can you trust this guy? If a team uses a supplemental pick, it is basically rewarding him for self destructive behavior.

If someone takes a gamble on him and he gets busted again, it is a massive scandal.

Oh, he may never be able to play in the NFL. It's absolutely fair to have an avenue of employment closed off because of your disease. Not in a general sense, as that would be discriminatory, but say you're a long haul trucker with a list of DUI's as long as your arm. You're going to lose your license. As you should.

Yep. Knowing full well what you are about to do is "dumb", and can have severe consequences if you get caught, yet doing it anyways.... That is the brain of addict.

See... Tiger Woods.

You're 100% correct.
It's not a disease at all. It's a choice. And that's alcoholism and gambling.

Sports betting has become way too casual and accessible. He’ll probably be used as the example for every NCAA team moving forward.

When literally every major sports league, podcast, and broadcast is advertising betting 24/7, I can see how what he was doing could start to feel less serious than it actually is. Makes you wonder if this turns into a “scared straight” situation for Sorsby. I wouldn’t write him off just yet.

You should rally leave this one to the expect, you sound uneducated saying that addiction is not a disease. I watched that disease kill my father, but thanks for making it trivial.
I watched a "disease" kill my brother.
It's not trivial.

But thanks for making assumptions.

I'm done with this.
Sorry about your father.

We just have different opinions.
