– Call it doing a little self-scouting, but one thing I have found out is that I started the draft research process too late this year. Or maybe I was too affected by the outcome from free agency. Point being that I have changed my mindset about the strategy from when I made my mock draft, because back then I wanted to build the strongest team for 2027 through taking players with the biggest potential, even if they were not ready to contribute now. But I want to compete, and I want to win. I have never cared for any QB class in 2027 since neither you, me, nor anyone else have any imaginable understanding of how it will look at that point, so right now I could not care any less if they end up with a high draft pick next year. I want to win, so I want them to target players that can contribute right away.
– OG Chase Bisontis is the best offensive lineman on the board (and #16 on my Cards board). Now, I am pretty sure that Isaiah Adams are still in the plans, but getting better is obviously never a bad thing. Bisontis is both a better prospect and a much better fit. It would also make sense to optimize your investment in Love, so maybe you just take the best offensive lineman regardless of position? I think this would be my pick.
– I had inside linebacker Anthony Hill in the top ten on the Cards board for my mock draft. He is a fantastic fit, but is it too much of a luxury pick considering the position value and options at ILB on the roster? Hill could potentially be an edge rusher but is a stud at his current position.
– Cornerback Jermod McCoy would have been a top half first round pick if not for his injuries. If he gets healthy, someone is going to get a major steal (he is #6 on the Cards board based purely on talent). Food for thoughts.
– I expect Ossenfort to trade back from #34.
– If I need a pass rusher on one specific play, I will choose R Mason Thomas or Cashius Howell over anyone in the draft class (including Reese and Bailey). Both have challenges (mainly size), but it didn’t seem to hold them back much last season. Howell has so short arms that they are basically not even there, while Thomas is probably not athletic enough to consistently threaten NFL offensive linemen. Both will probably only be designated pass rushers, but again, on one play, with a game on the line, I would want those two guys on the field. Maybe that is valuable enough for somewhere in the second round?
– I had them going with Carson Beck in my mock draft. We will see. Supposedly they have spent a lot of time on Cole Payton too. I expect them to take a QB today.
– It is impossible to guess what will happen at pick #65, but at least I can say that a quarterback or trench-guy should be the pick.
– Edge rushers T.J. Parker and Zion Young are very good fits for Rallis’ defense. They are much more well-rounded edge defenders than the aforementioned Thomas and Howell, but none of them offer the same level of pass rush-juice. It’s a matter of what you prefer.
– If they target a nickelback as insurance or even replacement for Garrett Williams, I could see it being Keionte Scott since they just hired his position coach at Miami last season.
