Great point. MB was ingrained into the Cards from his childhood. I remember seeing him when he was a kid down on the practice field during training camp---interacting with the players. He's seen the great players/RBs from OJ Anderson, Metcalf, Stump, Jim Otis, Wayne Morris, Larry Centers, etc up to JC. He also has a memory of the Cards passing on some great RBs---including Adrian Peterson so we could draft a LT. He probably has that in mind as he considers this draft.

During the Coryell era in St. Louis, Jim Hanifan was the OL coach. He was notorious for believing that he could take a decent athlete and turn him into a OL starter. He did that with DL Roger Finnie before he was cut. (That's not a typo, he was a DL) and Hanifan converted him into a pretty good RT. Hanifan did not want to 'waste' draft capital on a OL.

MB is also sentimental and wants to revisit past success. I think that was probably why we drafted MHJ so high---MB wanted to get a Fitz replacement and recreate Denny Green's bold move to take Fitz in the draft---when we already had Boldin.

Don't underestimate the MB mindset in all these discussions about the draft.
They drafted Harrison so highly because that’s where virtually every scout placed him and a WR1 was a major need. Sadly Harrison hasn’t been that player so far, but I anticipate a more productive season this year.

One thing Hanifan wanted was mean, tough linemen. He loved nasty players. The Cards’ OL was often called dirty. That was probably accurate. They were no fun to play.

Who wants Arch Manning anyway? He better improve ALOT to even be considered a day 2 pick.
I be shocked if he’s not the first pick. He does need to improve, but he has the “it” factor and teams love that. I expect a big season from him.

If he has the "it" factor he hasn't shown it thus far. If he's not making huge strides next season, I avoid him in the 1st round.

The Giants record with Saquon Barkley as their RB. I think you can argue that Barkley is a game changing RB but it didn't help the Giants all that much.
  • 2023: 6-11
  • 2022: 9-7-1 (Playoffs)
  • 2021: 4-13
  • 2020: 6-10
  • 2019: 4-12
  • 2018: 5-11
The Falcons with Bijan Robinson as their RB. 7-10 without him (2021-2022), 7-10 with him. Another RB who can be argued is a difference maker in a game.

  • 2025: 7-10
  • 2024: 7-10
  • 2023: 7-10
  • 2022: 7-10
  • 2021: 7-10
I would not be happy taking a RB at #3.
This argument relies on a person believing that the teams performance over multiple years is dependent upon that one pick. It’s a terrible argument. Why weren’t the players picked high in the other years the reason they didn’t outperform? It’s due to the aggregate of not picking good players or roster construction not because a team picked a rb high in a single draft. Can we put that argument to bed? It’s poorly constructed argument.

That's why I keep saying...The Vatican City Cardinals. Take the bird off the helmet and add the zucchetto skullcap.

Fun fact for me: I'm not catholic but my wife is. We went to her grandfather's funeral while we were just dating and she went up for the blessing and was given "the body of Christ", I didn't understand what was going on but when she came back and sat down, I asked her what the body of Christ tasted like? She gave me a dirty look and I said, does it taste like chicken? We both had to get up and leave pretending we were upset but I'm pretty sure everyone knew we were laughing so hard we had to leave.
. . . At her grandfathers funeral?

.
The Giants drafted a RB over 3-4 highly ranked QB prospects. This year is a completely different situation.

True on the pre-draft hype surrounding MHJ. I don’t recall a single eval that had him anything but a top overall pick. Even so, MB has final say on everything—and if he didn’t approve MHJ would not have been our #1. My point was the sentimentality that MB (and OG BB) has for past players and both use(d) that as a reference point for draft selection.

Rumors are MHJ going in trade to Green Bay. How quickly hype can change.

The OL for the St. Louis ‘Cardiac Cardinals’ were indeed a collection of some mean mofos. The were called 'dirty' because they were. They were playing when steroids and painkillers were handed out in the training room like Skittles. The scrimmage at the OL was pretty medieval.

Plenty of Youtube video on Dobler. Check out Dobler vs. Merlin Olson.

Is there a legit source to the MHJ to Green Bay rumor or just some dude on the internet in his moms basement
Probably the basement. Somebody trying to draw conclusions on the LaFleur brothers.
There was combine talk of a trade to the Browns though.

What's his "it" factor? The only thing he has going for him is his last name.

I'd like to see his comp % on throws more than 7 yards downfield. A lot of his yards came from swing passes and dump offs where the receiver made plays running it.

A lot of QBs get drafted in the 1st round and their team never progresses off a losing record. That means you should never draft a QB in the 1st round . . . even as it looks to be true for the Cards.d

That is because our OL was Fryed, Justin Fryed last year!
"James D. French. A murderer and coward. He was initially sentenced to life in prison for murdering a motorist in 1958 who picked him up from hitchhiking, but not wanting to spend his life in jail and too afraid to commit suicide, he also murdered his cellmate to compel the state to execute him. He was sentenced to death by electric chair in 1966. When giving his final words, French said “How’s this for your headline? ‘French Fries’.”

The joke or the laughter? The exorcist will be by to see you this evening.
I asked a serious question about what the "body of Christ" tasted like. It looked like some sort of wafer/cracker. When she didn't answer, that's when the "does it taste like chicken" came out. Inappropriate, for sure...but come on, that was funny!
And not trying to get into Religion, but I was raised Luthern. And during a discussion of religion, I said what's a Luthern? My friend said, that's a Catholic who doesn't go all the way. And I found that to be funny and a fair definition.

When Zombies from the Walking Dead compare notes on eating people, do they comment, "Tastes like Chicken." Actually, the only thing now that doesn't taste like chicken is chicken. Pass the salt. What padded room are you in? I'm next to Migs and Lector.
