I get the NFL’s spin here, but I don’t see why the producers of the survey can’t use their own weighting methodology. It’s well within norms.xc_hide_links_from_guests_guests_error_hide_media
Aha, Friday and Saturday of opening week are prohibited by the Sports Broadcasting Act of 1961 as the Friday after Labor Day will be the second Friday in September thanks to a late Labor Day this year. However, the game WILL be in week 1. So, it'll have to be on Wednesday or Thursday:The game almost has to be in the 8:30pm Eastern time slot on a Friday or Saturday night in the U.S. (12:30pm Sat or Sun in Melbourne).
So, most likely Friday night of opening week (like the Brazil game in 2025); or on the Friday of Thanksgiving week with a bye the prior week.
The NFL will play its first game in Melbourne, Australia, between the San Francisco 49ers and Los Angeles Rams in Week 1. With Friday or Saturday scheduling prohibited, that game will be played on Wednesday or Thursday of opening week. Whichever day remains open is when the Seattle Seahawks will host their season opener as the defending champs.
Sunday is not a feasible option for the Melbourne game, given the significant travel distance and turnaround to Week 2. Eastern Time in the U.S. is 14 to 16 hours behind Melbourne time, depending on daylight savings, and travel to Melbourne from the West Coast is about a 15- to 16-hour direct flight. The league is eyeing a start time between 8:30 p.m. and 9 p.m. ET for the September game, which would be 10:30 or 11 a.m. the next day in Melbourne.
The benefit of hosting the Melbourne game on Wednesday would be giving the 49ers and Rams extra recovery time for Week 2, but it would also change the tradition of the defending Super Bowl champs opening the season. These factors are continuing to be discussed.
