This is a valid point and I've heard it from others as well. A level financial playing field is needed. NIL has made college football a professional sport.

I'd like to see college football open the books for everyone to see.
There is no way to make things level. My opinion is that’s a pipe dream.

In terms of richer schools and alumni, this will always be the case, but it shouldn't be that way on paper, not if there is a governing body.

The rules have yet to catch up to NIL.

All you’ll do is push money back into the shadows…even with a cap in place if that is how we’ve defined level field

A cap is coming, but there will always be back door deals. I don't think that will ever change.

There will be always be shadow money but if there are rules in place, there is the possibility of enforcement.

This will be a deterrent of sort for some schools and alumni.

I wish I had your optimism. I think it changes very little

I don't think I'm being overly optimistic.

There will always be those who violate the rules. However, there needs to be a set of rules and cap that define it so there is at least a threat of enforcement.

There were rules in place and the mechanism to enforce rules but then the courts got involved and made it impossible to enforce those rules. I would expect the same thing to happen again

Don’t forget, all the member schools agreed to the rules and the NCAA to enforce them but then decided, when they got caught, to sue their way out of accountability. Those are the things that have crippled the sport. NIL and transfer portal are direct results of those things

Change is inevitable. There will always be a lag between rules and enforcement. Also, violations will always occur.

Let's hope there is a period of stability afterward before the next wave hits.

I know you aren’t suggesting I am against change as I’m not but I want change that works.

Remember they announced before this season about the Deloitte Clearing House for NIL deals? Great concept…until the first lawsuit. At that point, we’re back to status quo.

I think the only way real change happens is if the SEC and B1G both band together and and unanimously agree to binding rules. That will drag along the ACC and Big12 and then maybe we have a shot.

Thanks for the discussion. I’m liking (and hating) this subject matter

I’ve been thinking about Leavitt leaving. What teams, regardless of QB need, would be a step up?

Every SEC team minus Vanderbilt, Kentucky and Mississippi State?

USC, Ohio State, Oregon, Indiana and Michigan from B1G? Illinois?

Miami and Clemson? FSU?

This has to be about more than money. He has to be considering which program is going to showcase him properly to get to Sundays. If all he cares about is money then, good riddance I guess

Definitely a showcase to get into the top 10 in the draft. Lincoln Riley would be his best bet.

Anyone but another Big 12 school. This might work out well for him if it's another Jayden Daniels situation. SEC prepared him well for the NFL.

Who Kenny? Wheels are in motion for his future here.
Doesn’t matter. If ASU just becomes a feeder school dilly will eventually leave for greener pastures. It’s just reality. There’s no way to nail down coaches these days.

It isn't about his contact. It's all the ancillary stuff. Like actually buy in from Crow and the University to become a real program.
I feel like we’ve heard this song and dance for decades. You gotta have the deep pocket boosters and asu just doesn’t have that.

I come in peace:

~He’s looking for a bigger payday, and ASU isn’t getting a hometown discount this time around. Heard $4 mil is the asking price
~Texas Tech and Miami are the leaders in the clubhouse. Wisconsin is an option, too. Obviously could change as time passes
~There’s resentment by the coaches and players towards Leavitt for his attitude with the team since his injury. Some have said that he bought into the offseason press clippings a bit too much. Notice Dilly’s attitude about the situation in interviews of late

I would be shocked if he returns to ASU

If I’m LSU I try to get Dilly/Leavitt on a package deal. Dilly is the opposite archetype than those old insufferable Brian Kelly types. I do believe Dilly wants to stay at ASU but the $EC and FSU are different animals. If ASU wins out (which I don’t want) I think his resume in b2b seasons and what he’s done with Sims will warrant a top-5 job.

Neither LSU or FSU are top jobs anymore

Louisiana state is a mess right now with the governor’s interference. Even LSU fans recognize that their desirability has taken a big hit due to all the drama around the program.

If any SEC team was hurt by the addition of Texas and Oklahoma it’s LSU because now they can’t sell Texas recruits on being in the SEC when there are three much closer SEC schools now

If this is true... It's not surprising. This is the reality of college sports now.

I love Sam Leavitt and everything he has meant to ASU. At the same time, given our budget compared to other schools, it may not be wise to invest in him with a whole bunch of holes at other positions after this year and other guys potentially transferring. He is a difference-maker, no doubt, but without the other talent we could potentially get or keep with extra NIL $$, I don't know good we can be next year.

Great post.

I was with you until the end. Everyone cares about money unless it is a morality issue.

Yup. I’m happy for the kids they get to cash in, even if sometimes it leads to poor decisionmaking on their part. Still crummy for college football and fans.
