OT: Kyler Murray Debacle Thread

I can assure you that both the 49ers and Seahawks would trade their QB's (and I know this for a fact with SF) straight up for Kyler in a millisecond.

Most Seattle fans i know love Geno and wouldn't trade him for Kyler.

Tannehill missed the entirety of his 2017 season and I’m sure he wasnt on walkabout.

Their values are definitely closer now than anyone would have thought 12 months ago.

I know, his injury history was an issue, as it is with Kyler, this will only be his 2nd full season.

For sure his value is closer to Tannehill than a 1st.

I would love to see videos of Murray studying film, articles about his intense preparation during the week, and hear stories about how he explained some nuance he discovered about an opponent's defensive tendencies and how to exploit them to MHJ... but instead we're left with, "I don’t sit there for 24 hours and break down this team or that team and watch every game because, in my head, I see so much.”

Not only did Keim feel the need to add a study clause to his contract, but it specifically said that he couldn't study while being distracted by video games! Keim is an idiot in all kinds of ways, but surely that didn't come from nowhere.

You can shout from the rooftops that the "Call of Duty meme" is BS, but ultimately it's up to Murray to prove it, and thus far he's failed miserably.

I really encourage everyone to read my summary of "a day in the life of a backup QB" to see the kind of mental preparation a QB goes through who doesn't just rely on his natural gifts. I've seen no hint that Murray does anything like this with his time. So until he shows evidence on the field that he's mastered the game mentally, "Call of Duty" is a perfect stand-in for whatever it is that he's doing after Halloween every year.

Why though? Daves has a point.

You can believe it's stupid but it's a purely faith based position. There is more evidence that says the opposite.

We'll have to agree to disagree here. Whatever Murray is doing, on top of all the deficiencies you mention, his play seems to evidence that he's not as mentally prepared as many less physically gifted QBs. And his play drops off precipitously in Nov - Jan every year. I'm going to keep calling that the "Call of Duty" effect.

Smith made the Pro Bowl the last 2 years and his numbers in all categories of any importance crap all over Kylers.

Purdy, in his last 2 seasons as full time starter has 2 x 4000+ yard seasons, 31 TD's last year and 20 and counting this year. Kyler has never passed what? 25? His career YPA is 8.9, which craps all over Kyler's, he averages over 260 yards per game, which again craps on Kylers, as does his passer rating. He was 4th in MVP voting last year, and Kyler has never ranked.

Freaking nuts to think either guy is not better, not just statistically but just watching them play.

If he threw a 5 yard our route and it hit the receiver in the helmet then yes, it was a badly targeted throw.

So on the ball LaPorta caught last night if he hadn't got his head around faster the ball would have hit him right in the head. THat's exactly where it was thrown, between 2 defenders. So IF LaPorta doesn't get his head around and that ball hits him in the helmet, bad throw?

If that guy is Kenny Pickett I'm going to be furious. I never got why anybody liked that guy. He was a one year wonder in college despite being a 5 year guy who started for 3 full years and most of a 4th. His last year was awesome but the 2 prior he had 13 TD's and 9 picks.

He has NFL size but he doesn't have a great arm, wasn't particularly accurate in college and hasn't been in the NFL. And he was in a PERFECT situation in Pittsburgh, loaded defense, great coach, 1000 yard rusher, good not great WR's a good TE and he failed. Now he's on the Eagles which is another loaded roster, best roster in the NFL, 2 great WR's, an incredible run game. Of course he looked good in limited time there its one of the easiest teams in the NFl to play QB for.

Coming from Penn State to the Steelers and they moved on that fast tells you something, Tomlin is NOT stupid he knew this kid is just a game manager if we HAVE to throw the ball he'll turn it over.

McCarthy beat out Darnold for the starting QB spot in preseason. They aren't going to just give up the advantage of the rookie QB deal for a QB who they they say was inferior.

I would rather watch Cousins or Mac Jones or Daniel Jones or pretty much anyone else than Tune or Jaxson Dart next year (you can add Fields to that mix). The issue with moving off Kyler this offseason is that you will almost certainly be downgrading at QB. However, if you can get a 1st round pick for him, you have to do it. (of course purely hypothetical)

Even if they draft Dart I see no way they actually start him. I like him but he will need time to acclimate for sure.

Yeah but Lance didn't play for Harbaugh in college. That's what I was reading, everyone, like me, said McCarthy didn't throw the ball that much in college I don't like him but once NFL teams actually started working him out they realized he's got the size and arm, it's just that Harbaugh likes to run. But he apparently was REALLY well coached in college. With a year in the Minnesota system being coached by O'Connell, on a rookie deal it's going to be REALLY hard for them to pay Darnold.

Not saying they won't but the obvious choice is if McCarthy is healthy, move on from Darnold. That is a big if though he's already had 2 surgeries on that knee

15-2 4100 yards and 35TDs to 12 Ints of a QB that easily has 7-8 years left will be hard to move on from especially from an unknown quantity in JJ. Good problem to have in Minnesota, but unless Darnold completely flops in the playoffs not sure how you move on from him.

Was it an out route?

If the receiver is moving away, towards, or is still the ball can hit him in the helmet. If the receiver is moving laterally the ball needs to lead him.

Just watched it, it was a basic slant and the ball hit him in the chest, not his head.

Good insight. Based on what we have heard from Murray “drew calls the plays, im just here to execute them” - I imagine these film/game planning days have been KK and then petzing breaking down the film and feeding Murray the game plan and him just responding “uh huh”. The only glimmer of hope we got this season was when we heard Murray asked MHjr what routes he was comfortable running - but even that is so ridiculously basic

The receivers who have played with the true greats, like manning and Brady, have all had some account where sitting down with them for game planning was long hours with intense break downs. Never have heard an ounce of that from Murray.
