With the implementation of the 5th year option for players in the draft, it is one of the best indicators for whether a player is a bust.

If the team doesn't pick up your 5th year option, guess what ?

Could be, but Ingram and Martin both got multi-year deals from their initial teams without their options being picked up.

Meanwhile, Coples and RGIII had theirs exercised.

Here is the list from the 2013 first round

2-Luke Joeckel
3-Dion Jordan
6-Barkevious Mingo
9-Dee Milliner
10-Chance Warmack
12-DJ Hayden
24-Bjorn Werner
26-Datone Jones
28-Sylvester Williams
29-Cordarrelle Patterson
32-Matt Elam

That is 11 of 32, and there are more who are on the bubble.

7-Jonathan Cooper
16-EJ Manuel
17-Jarvis Jones

So, if these are all declined, that would be 14 of 32 which is a huge bust rate.

I believe that Cooper's option voided automatically because he was traded.

Patriots won’t pick up Jonathan Cooper’s option

Ian Rapoport of NFL Media reports that the team is passing on that chance, which sets Cooper up for free agency after the 2016 campaign.

Cooper missed his entire rookie season with a broken leg and made 11 starts over the last two seasons for Arizona while playing in 24 games. That’s not the kind of track record that leads teams to pick up $11.9 million options that are guaranteed against injury only.

I wouldn't necessarily say all of those players are "busts".

Even if Cooper has a really good year, he isn't worth $11.9 million.

Like I said at the time, if the first guy picked in the draft is from the MAC, it's a bad draft.

Exactly. It doesn't have to be this Black and White. The option salary is calculated on potential based on draft status. Just because the players didn't live up to the potential and justify a huge payday doesn't mean that they are not starting material.

Joeckle, Warmack, Hayden and Elam will all be attractive FAs

NFL - Not For Long. % making it to a second contract seems to be getting less and less amoung higher drafted prospects.

I agree With this perception. The reason.. I Think the pool of players from the smaller colleges capable of figthing for a rosterspot has increased dramaticly
