Interesting. I guess you bring him in on 3rd and long and let him chase the QB around? I can't see him being much more than a situational pass rusher.

How about when we are trying to hold a lead and the other team is passing on every down to catch up?

That's when we need him the most.

How does that work against the cap when you have guys with incentives in their contract? Do they just assume the incentives will be met and use that number? But then what about something open-ended like sacks, where you get a certain bonus per sack, without any limit? Do they allow you to go over once the incentives have all been added up, then pay a penalty like the NBA? That doesn't sound right.

Is the dry heat in AZ some sort of fountain of youth? You can make the same comparison to a few vets brought in by the Suns (although most of the credit goes to the training staff). Sarver + whatever yes-man GM is no match for Mike B and BASK..

As a Charger fan, I think I can tell you a little about Freeney since he last played for us.

He wasn't bad with the Chargers, he's a good situational pass rusher. He didn't get many sacks with us but he was really close a couple of times. Unfortunately, those times that he was close, the opposing QB completed a pass for a big play vs us.

I wouldn't expect him to get many sacks with yall but I think he should get a pretty good amount of pressure. His leadership should also help your defense overall. Arizona has maybe the best secondary in football so adding a guy like Freeney should make sense.

He did have an issue staying healthy, even in games that he played, he did not finish many of them so that is probably your biggest concern with Freeney. Freeney was never an iron man durable player even during his prime when he was young with the Colts so age 34, you can imagine. But assuming he will only be used in situational passing downs, he should manage to stay healthy on limited snaps.

Freeney has a great personality and is just someone that you want to root for. Best of luck with him!

I dunno about that. Peppers is a freak and he's still stout against the run. Even in Freeney's prime he was of a one dimensional player. Peppers was such an underrated signing by Ted Thompson.

I was thinking.. League minimum + half a million a sack would get some pressure on opposing QB's.

I love "show me" contracts, even if it means we lose a top performer after a year.

This will no doubt be DF's last year.. So let him pad his bank account all the way to our SB win!

Stopping the screen will cause less screens and more sack opportunities

Either way, we are signing him to pressure the QB specifically.

Okafor if one noticed, be it lack of instincts or desire to sack the QB, has not been great on screens or backs on delayed handoffs in his pursuit to get the quarterback

If our secondary can continue to lock down other teams wide outs, Freeney will get his chances. It's sometime the "thought of Freeney", or someone like him, that will cause other teams to hesitate. The Big Red have lost nothing with this gamble. If he doesn't perform, he'll be gone. After all it's only money.

If Oakafor has been king of the coverage sack, Freeney should feast.

Oak has taken 90% of all Def snaps this season. If Freeney slides into about a third of those.... that still leaves a lot of playing time for an unproven rookie to step into. Definitely remains a concern. Hopefully Oakafor missing a month translates to only 3 games plus the bye week.
