Defensive line (7)
Glenn Dorsey, Ian Williams, Quinton Dial, Arik Armstead, Tank Carradine, Mike Purcell, Tony Jerod-Eddie
Worth noting: The 49ers guaranteed $2 million of Darnell Dockett's $3.5 million pay, so the odds suggest they will end up keeping him. But Dockett is a little banged up with some cracked cartilage in his ribcage, and he has not played much this summer. This group is loaded, and the 49ers could use some combination of the other players (Dorsey, Dial, Carradine, Armstead, Jerod-Eddie) for the inside pass-rush spots that they envisioned for the 34-year-old Dockett.

I am torn with my love for Dockett and not wanting him to go out as a final roster cut and my hatred for the Niners.

I really wish we would have ponied up the money to keep him, but I felt the same about Wilson.

from my understanding, there was not a huge difference in the $ amounts offered by AZ and SF. Because of the 2 million guaranteed, I think he makes it regardless but I would love for him to get cut and come home. I am sure we can make room for him.

I can't see the 49ers cutting him, with the possibility of the Cards resigning him. Hopefully they do though

I watched part of the last game and they were not saying a thing about this so I doubt it.

NOte, some of those guys on that list are not having great camps, for one Armstead who's not having a bad camp but who has been extremely inconsistent, one good play 2 bad ones. The coach has been very honest, he makes some great plays, he makes some awful plays, we like him but he's a rookie.

Dockett ironically is comparing Armstead to Calais and saying he will eventually be a dominant player in a few years.

It would be a major surprise if DD doesn't make the roster but I guess in a year they don't expect to be very good, maybe they eat the money if they think the younger guys are better.

Steve Kiem during a radio interview this week commented, ". . .better to let 'em go a year too early than a year too late!"

At the time, Kiem was talking about the release of Lorenzo Alexander and Dave Zustadil; but it appears that the statement could have easily have applied to Darnell Dockett as well.

I for one would not sign him if the Niners release him. He is injured so he would take up a roster spot that a productive player could use and I think the team would be better off with who they already have along the Dline. He can't play nose tackle and I also think he is pretty much finished as a player. Sign him to a one day contract to retire is fine by me.

The Cardinals were able to cut the cord with Dockett. Maybe he has a season or two left in him at a sub par level. However I don't see any reason to bring him back at this point if he can't even make the Niners team.

Maybe down the road if he gets cut and the Cardinals DL sustains a couple of injuries you bring him in to fill in for the remainder of the season.

Either way I just don't see the Niners cutting him before they got anything in return from him. If they do it's just a sign that his career is pretty much over.

Disagree. He is a force on the line and commands double teams which open up huge A gaps for ILBs

When Bowles came to town, he set up an attacking scheme that allowed one to one battles. DD raved about the change and then did virtually nothing with it. I always appreciated his effort, even in his waning years, but saw nothing in his final year here to warrant a return.

RT @RapSheet: The #49ers have released DT Darnell Dockett, source said. Could a return to #AZCardinals be next?

Wow.

That is pretty crazy.

What is even more crazy, I don't see where Dockett would have a role for the Cardinals.

Maybe if there is an injury he will be back. Cardinals can get him REALLY cheap now since he has the guaranteed money from the Niners.

Wow, SF just ate $2 million. Amazing how much money is thrown around in the NFL. :mulli:

49ers release Darnell Dockett

The move saves $3.25 million in cash and cap space, and it makes Dockett a free agent. He can now sign with any other team.

Dockett had been dealing with a rib issue; he called it a cracked rib, and the team called it a cartilage issue. If he doesn’t quickly land with a new team, an injury grievance is possible, since players can’t be cut when they are hurt.

Either way, there’s a chance team will wait until after Week One to sign Dockett. As a vested veteran, his full base salary becomes guaranteed if he’s on the roster for the opening weekend.

wow, surprised they cut him. Hopefully we can make room for him as a rotational guy/leader but then again, he left us for the enemy so if we dont, I wont sweat it one bit.

Doubt we pick him up. Also, with what BCF just posted, I doubt anyone touches him before week one.
