First of all, i hate that team with a passion. At least the Niners are respectable dudes that aren't ahead of themselves. Richard Sherman talks way too much, he had one pick that was thrown to him, not Vernon. Marshawn is nothing more than a guy who will fall forward and get you 3-4 YPC every play. Pete Carrol is deuschy.

With that off of my chest, i was talking with a friend yesterday and he told me the only reason the Seahawks stadium is so loud is because of the rain overhangs that funnel all the noise towards to field. It makes sense to me. Can anyone else confirm this thought?

If thats true, the construction f that stadium is a serious competitive advantage. The Niners huddle looked like a rubberband ball out there trying to hear one another.

The crowd noise goes back decades. The "12th man" originated in the Kingdome. Lots of caffeine in Seattle...

I agree that the Seahawks talk too much, especially Sherman, but he's as elite as they come.

I don't like the Seahawks either and Lynch and Sherman are among my most disliked, but come on. Lynch is a beast of a RB who is almost impossible to take down on first contact and Sherman is one of the 3 or 4 best corners in the entire league. Yes they are arrogant and annoying to most people who aren't Seahawks fans, but they are both very good.

Yes, the acoustics of the stadium do amplify the crowd noise, its almost like two orchestra stages facing each other. However, the Seahawks as a franchise have done a great job of feeding into it. They have their flag raising each game, a tally of all the opposing false starts, ect. I dont doubt that their fans scream themselves silly, they'd probably be pretty damn loud anywhere, but that stadium makes them literally deafening.

Watching on TV doesn't really tell you how loud that place is...go watch a game there to experience it. It's deafening & unbelieveable

The stadium is built to amplify the sound, but the fans definitely also bring the noise and the 12th man moniker is deserved. The hawks fans at least are also pretty cool and weren't overtly hostile to me wearing Cards gear the last 2 games I went to since moving up here

The stadium may have been built to funnel the noise towards the field but how is that an advantage over a closed stadium where the noise has nowhere to go but in the stadium?

I was thinking the same thing, how can an open air stadium could be louder than a domed one?
But then its not how loud the stadium is, but how loud it is on the field and how it affects the visiting offense.
The metal bleachers, canopy, overhangs, parabola all make the field noisier not neccesarily the stadium.

They have never hid that the coverings were designed to do two things - keep rain out for 70% of the seats and to keep noise in

However, you need to make noise to have it kept in and Seattle does an excellent job at that. They set the record this past weekend for noise at a live sporting event topping 136 decibels on an official reading - takes more than an overhang to do that.

Keep in mind the Kingdome was always the loudest place in the league - going back to 1983 Dan Reeves was complaining about the noise in the dome after getting bounced in the playoffs

The "noise rule" that the NFL put in was largely due to issues opposing teams had getting plays in at the kingdome

If you look at Husky Stadium it is also very loud - Autzen can get going as well a state to the south

While it definitely gets louder on 3rd down and at the line there are 3 things that help make the stadium loud - the first is that it's now the cool thing to do, the 2nd ties in to the 1st in that the team has created a great environment - from the blue thunder drumline performing outside before the game and in the game, the 12 flag, the hawk flying out of the tunnel leading the team, fans get pumped - the 3rd is the fans really believe they can make an impact and cheer during the huddle, during all downs, it's just constant noise

With the Behring ownership and the changes in Seattle during that same time that shifted the dynamic of the city so much was lost from the environment during the 80s - however, the ownership group has done a fantastic job bringing so much of that back

A far cry from when I went there for the 1st game in that stadium - a loss against the cardinals - in which they needed local businesses and a deadline extension to avoid a blackout and the place was quiet .... I went hoarse yelling at others .... it's grown so much sense then

The seahawks support a local fan who videotapes the games from his seats and host his videos on their webpage .... he records and adjusts the volume to a -3 setting to try and smooth it, but it still comes off pretty loud

Their stadium isn't in the top 20 in stadium capacity for the league - but louder than the larger, covered wonder in dallas and a lot of other covered buildings ..... you also have to balance the overhangs with the fact that they don't cover the entire lower level, they don't cover the endzones and one endzone is fairly open to the outside with relatively fewer seats that sit above the pricey field level boxes

As mentioned, TV just doesn't do that place justice when it's rocking - anytime the defense is on the field you can't have any type of normal conversation around you - you have to scream at the person right next to you and they probably aren't going to be able to hear you ........... it's great

Some Niner fans wrote a letter to the editor complaining about how unfair the crowd noise in Seattle was. They suggest a rule that the game stops if the noise gets over a certain level.

yeah .... that's pretty funny stuff ..... I feel bad for the dude who co-signed it

there are a couple threads on the niners board addressing the same issue about how it's unfair, etc ..... while most of the response there is rightful ridicule, it's still funny none the less

I think those guys would have hated the 80s AFC West with trips to Arrowhead, the Kingdome, Mile High and the "Black Hole" actually still meant something somewhat intimidating

Exactly, Husky Stadium has always been known as a loud stadium, especially since they added the second overhang in the late 80s. It wasn't done for noise, but the noise was certainly noticed. Since the Kingdome, Seattle has done a good job of trying to make stadiums as open-air as possible while having rain cover.
