The Ronald Reagan 1980s were all about going back to the future--rewriting the past to better suit Reagan's upbeat vision of the present. So, Sylvester Stallone's John Rambo (a psychotic, shell-shocked Vietnam vet in the original film, transformed into a flag-waving hero in the sequel) was able to go back to Southeast Asia and "correct" history by decisively (and single-handedly) winning that messy ol' war on behalf of America. Red Dawn is a paranoid cold-war cautionary tale that presents us not with a rosy alternative past, but with an ominous vision of the future, metaphorically plopping a piece of Russian-occupied Afghanistan into America's back yard. In this celebration of the Second Amendment, storm troopers from the Evil Empire descend upon the inadequately defended United States and hold America hostage. Stealthily avoiding the invaders, a motley group of red-blooded, small-town, gun-toting teenagers go underground to form the Wolverines, a guerilla resistance squad dedicated to making those Russkies rue the day they parachuted onto U.S. soil. It's a darn good thing those kids had the right to keep and bear arms, huh! Written and directed by macho filmmaker John Milius, the self-described "Zen fascist" who also cowrote Apocalypse Now, as well as the horrifying shark story Robert Shaw tells in Jaws. The cast includes Patrick Swayze, C. Thomas Howell, Lea Thompson, Jennifer Grey (a few years before she and Swayze took up Dirty Dancing), Charlie Sheen, Powers Boothe, Harry Dean Stanton, and Ben Johnson. Red Dawn was a commercial success, although audiences invariably split into two camps, finding it either patriotic or appalling. Whatever your verdict, the film remains a telling reflection of its era. --Jim Emerson

One of my faves as a kid. I hadn't seen it in 25 years. It actually held up much better than I was expecting. I had forgotten about the pilot telling us the details of the invasion. I probably just glossed over that part when I was a kid because I didn't understand it. "Avenge Me" was always one of my favorite phrases, so it was cool to see that scene again.

The first motion picture released with an MPAA PG-13 rating.

The film made the Guinness Book of Records for having the most acts of violence of any film up to that time. According to their calculations, 134 acts of violence occur per hour, 2.23 per minute.

Ha, how times have changed.

Fantastic flick that should never have been remade. Needless to say, I never watched the remake.

How brilliant is Joss Whedon? He put Harry Dean Stanton, the man most famous for his line "Avenge meeeee!" into the Avengers. Yeah, that happened.

The remake is bad, and I think they get that because you don't see the remake on tv at all but you see the original on regularly.

I predict big careers for several of the kids in this movie.

My bad I thought it was like 18 months old. I saw it on On Demand and regretted it immediately but that was awhile ago I thought.

By tv I meant cable seems like movies go to HBO, Cinemax or SHO fairly quickly nowadays

Gotcha. It could be older than I think but it doesnt feel that long ago. Nothing will hold a candle when it comes to remaking a classic though.

Powers Booth ( USAF fighter pilot ) = under rated. Good in Red Dawn. Really good in Tombstone.

In the middle of the cold war. Art imitating life?

Sure, I get that. But as a filmmaking standard, it just doesn't do much for me. If we're talking cold war, I tend to gravitate toward this:

Many of us can enjoy both. Both good films in their own way. One just Cornier then the other :)

Yeah, but watching a group of kids (as a kid) work together to beat the enemy was pretty awesome.

If I want that I'll watch The Goonies or The Monster Squad. :D

Goonies...great movie...super nostalgia factor...surprised they haven't rebooted it yet.

Although, a sequel would be cool...along as they had the same actors (Josh Brolin, Sean Astin, Corey Feldman, etc.)
