too much goes in to the making of a successful NFL QB....you cannot pick just who is the best available....but who is the best for your team, staff etc. I still think Rivers was the best QB in that draft,...but Manning's rings would argue otherwise....I also believe that Rivers would be better now than he is if he had gone to Oakland or Minnesota. Manning on the other hand....would be selling car insurance if he had went to sandy eggo.
the coaching staff and team philosophies have a major impact on how a QB develops physically as well as psychologically and many good college QB's come in to the NFL and get FUBAR'ed by the team that drafted them...... not purposefully of course, but coaches have egos too...and often think they can mold a player into the guy they want because he already has skills and intangibles.....also, IMO...one of the biggest traits to look for in drafting a QB is humility...when a guy is asked about a good game or a successful play, I want to hear him pass credit around to his team mates,...and really mean it,...it is usually an indicator of a guy who never truly believes he is good enough at the game, and he will work harder at it.....there have been exceptions to that however, as in anything else.
I would be interested to know why you think Rivers would be better if he had been in Oakland or Minny.

I rarely do any prognosticating when it comes to college guys in the NFL but I actually got to go the Holiday Bowl in SD when BYU played Cal. One Aaron Rodgers was the QB for Cal and his RB was JJ Arrington.

After that game I was convinced Rodgers was weenie-armed and overrated and that Arrington was a man among boys destined for greatness.

Hits:

Aaron Rodgers (Was a diehard for this guy before, during, and after he was drafed)
Big Ben (Wanted Cards to draft him but we did okay that draft anyway_
Eli Manning (Duh bloodlines)
Josh Feeeman (Called him a bust and I look to be right)
Alex Smith (Said he was no where near Rodgers and I was right)
Andrew Luck (Another of my favs but this was an easy one)
David Carr (Bust)
Vince Young (Called this)
Chrisitian Ponder (Busto)
Phillip Rivers (Loved him coming out - underatted QB draft!)

Misses:

Blaine Gabbert (oops)
Jake Locker (oops)
Matt Leinart ( My cross to bear for the rest of my life)
Kevin Kolb (ask K9)
Max Hall
Pretty much any Cardinals QB acquired ever
Mark Sanchez (Thought he would be stud)
Kurt Warner ( I was actually actively rooting for this guy to fail as late as the last regular season game of 2008 - because of my Matt Leinart man love)

Still Deciding:

Cam Newton (Fell in and out of love with him and his play last 2 seasons is aligned with that)
Jay Cutler (Hes about right what I thought he would be)
Ryan Tannenhill (Thought he was a bust - well see)
RG3 (was worried abotu injuries which may still be right but didnt think he was THAT good when on the field)
Carson Palmer (Ive always loved him and looked like a genius his first 3 years. Been up and down since)

Basically if they went to USC or were acquired by the Cardinals I cant be trusted. And if they did BOTH?

God help us :)

Are you sure you weren't like many of us who thought at 37 Kurt was just too old in 2008? Of course the fact that he hadn't had a passer rating over 90 in 6 years blinded us some as well. Boy did he prove us wrong.

Just one :).

I still say if he would have stayed away from the vodka and out of jail, MoC would have been a good NFL RB.

Plus, unlike everyone else, I wanted AP over Levi Brown :D.

In that draft I was big on Adam Carriker and Patrick Willis. Never liked the pick of Levi Brown.

I like this topic :)

So for this year I'm calling my shot. Marcus Mariota will be the best NFL QB in college currently. I actually think hell end up being the #1 pick even though that certainly not popular thought.

Haven't evaluated much of Bridgewater but from what I have seen Mariota is the more athletic prospect and I think he is a more polished passer too he just played in an offense that was 70/30 run. Hell breakout at Johnny Football level this year IMO.

Also like Kevin Hogan and Hundley (2 more Pac 12 guys) and also think Manziel can play in NFL provided he doesn't get eaten alive by his party boy tendencies and think skin. McCarron is a back up to me and i dont love Aaron Murray. Haven't sent enough of Boyd or Bridgewater.

Last one: Jamies Winston of FSU is next big thing. Best FSU QB since Charlie Ward. And yes better then Weinke.

Watch Taj Boyd this weekend against Georgia. He throws such a good ball. Too bad he's only about 5'11-6'0, which does matter.

Oh yeah, back to the original topic, there was not a bigger Byron Leftwich fan than myself. Passing on him was as mad as I've ever been being a Cards fan.

Rivers is tough, a trait which Al Davis has always admired. At the time Norv Turner was the Oakland coach and Rich Gannon was on his last leg...the Raiders were still running a semi west coast style offense with only occasional deep passes so Rivers perceived lack of arm strength at the time would not have been an issue....and the Drew Brees drama never would have happened.

Mike Tice was coaching the Vikes and IMO the minds matched up well there....then there was Nate Burleson and Randy Moss. For a guy with "lack of arm strength" having a pair of WR's who can adjust on the fly and get to the ball on deep passes is very beneficial....the Vikes at the time still had Culpepper playing well however and by the time they drafted there were no QB's available.

QBs I've wanted the Cardinals to draft:

Colt McCoy, thought he would be perfect for CKW's offense.
Greg McElroy, just something about that guy that intrigued me.
Brad Sorenson, Southern Utah. Fit perfectly with: Neil Lomax, same conference as Portland State, Jim Hart Southern Illinois and Kurt Warner Northern Iowa.

:D

Who Roy Williams, I have no recollection of that.

:D

Yup ;)

Who was the WR that you pimped hard? Saying he was best in draft one year and didn't do squat in football?

That would be the guy who caught all those Drew Henson passes at Michigan, David Terrell.

Turns out he had a major drug problem, in fact just a few months ago he was busted, caught with drugs and all the stuff to distribute it. Pot if I recall but apparently he was using more serious drugs while in the NFL.

LOL Sorenson has all the physical tools. 6'5" 230lbs rocket arm. Just doesn't have the experience against top level competition.

Whenever I rave about a college QB and his pro potential, just disregard bevause I obvioulsy have no clue. I have a horrible track record in who I think is/will be good and who I think is not any good.
Examples:
1) I was touting Tyler Wilson for 2 years. I read where he is now 4th on the Oakland depth chart and passed by former Penn St. bum Mike McGloin.

2) When he entered the league, I thought Joe Germaine was as good as anybody. I think he played in the Arena League.

3) A couple years ago, the freshman for Texas relieved the "injured" Colt McCoy. I said he'd be a great QB. I think he transferred to SMU and did nothing.

4) A couple years ago Iowa freshman Vanderburg lit up OSU. I thought he'd have a great career. He didn't do a thing.

5) I ripped everybody and anyone, especially Skorp, who touted Philip Rivers as a top 5 draft pick.....oops.

6) Even though I'm not giving in yet, I think Russel Wilson is way overrated and will struggle................pencil him in for league MVP.

7) I said Terrelle Pryor would never amount to anything as a QB. Now it looks like he may start in Oakland. Draft him for you fanatasy team.

At least I got Troy Smith and Andrew Luck right..........so far. And I still think I can get Alex Smith right even though the more I ripped on him, the better he played.

Obvioulsy, I have no idea what makes a good QB. I'm sticking to LB's. I know them.......just ask me about Rolondo McClain :D.

From what I am reading Luck may not be totally out of the woods just yet. Looks to me like the NFL is moving to the mobile QB that both pass and run. Seattle and San Francisco are good examples. This may require a new type of defense be developed.

Luck is a very good runner, he didn't run much last year because they ran a pro style offense and asked him to stay in the pocket.

he's no RG3 but he can run, and he finishes off his runs too, ran some guys over in college.

Interested in seeing how he progresses this year, he was quite good considering how bad the Colts personnel was, but he threw too many picks and threw into coverage quite often, there was some "dropped INT" stat where he led the league in that. Arians offense last year was VERY aggressive, with a rookie QB he asked him to do so much and take so many risks, curious to see how that changes this year.

Yep it was actually just a few weeks ago now not months he got busted. Very small amount of pot compared to some other famous athletes who didn't get charged with intent to distribute, but there is apparently an advantage to being a CURRENT player over an ex player.

From what I read, Terrell has admitted he used drugs throughough his NFL career and not just pot.

Hard to catch the ball when you're seeing 3 of them.
