He's for sure a top of the 2nd candidate. IF HE and Ponder are both there when we pick, it'll be a tough pick. Depends on who we draft in the
1st.

As for the 1st round, if it goes the way of that mock maybe we should be interviewing and trying out Fairley. Though trading down would be the way to go, imo.

If we draft Ponder, does that mean we're giving up on Skelton?

If they take a QB in the 1st or 2nd, which is very possible, it simply means that the FO is not putting all it's eggs into one basket.

They're definately interested in wratcheting up the competition for the position. If Skelton responds well, all the better.

I don't think so Garth. Whiz likes competition---and as we've seen, he's switched starting QBs (away from the pre-season appointee---a.k.a. Matt Leinart) to another three times in four years (Warner, Warner, Anderson). Only Kurt Warner in 2009 was the appointed starter and remained so.

Yes, absolutely.

Mitch, WildBB, the thing you have to understand is that there's only so many reps to go around. 1st Team QB gets the bulk of the reps, 2nd string gets the bulk of what's left, and 3rd string plays scout. When people talk about developing a 3rd stringer, they don't mean developing to be a starter, in general; they mean that they may become a viable 2nd stringer.

If we draft a QB early, Skelton will almost certainly not be developed very much, if at all. Our starter, whomever that turns out to be (probably Bulger), will get almost all the practice time. If we have a high draft pick, they won't want to waste it by not giving them their big shot.

Giving up = Matt Leinart

(I have no reason to believe that they don't still see something in the greatest QB Fordham has ever produced. I repeat: He's an asset to be developed as best one can for Cards' use or given up as part of a trade at some point.)

I like Harvey. He's a good tackler, plays well side to side, very good closing speed but needs to work some on his covering. I can see him taken in the late 2nd to third round.

Do you think he could be selected so early??i see a lot of boards and many times doesnt appear in the top 15 for position..he wasnt even invited at combine??i think the cards could take him in the 4th round..anyway about covering problems i think he is always the big issue for rookie linebackers

I think he is good enough to be taken so early but if gets taken after the third in my opinion someone got themselves a steal.

He's an unheralded small school prospect who makes up for his lack of ideal size with intangibles. Whis probably has him penciled into the starting lineup already.

For the record, I actually like Harvey. I think he'll be a quality special teamer with starting potential down the road.

I'm not a Brooks Reed fan at all. Just because he has long blonde hair doesn't make him Clay Matthews. Now if he'd get on the PED's, like Clay, then we're talking. I think there are much better options at the top of round 2 than Reed. Houston, Sheard, Ponder, an OL, Paea are all guys that could be hanging around.

I still can't understand the possibility of drafting a QB. I'm sure the team will sign a vet FA or trade for one, after a new CBA is in place. At least for another year they'll treat Skelton as the "future". Hall and Bartell will vie for the third spot.

I mostly agree with this. It will be magnified this year if the CBA isn't settled in time for training Camp. Even the OTA's help develop youngins some which could also be a victum of the labor dispute.

Bringging in the kid from ASU is great. Another QB thread not so much

Well the QB position is the most important one on a team. :D

Sounds like the solution to our SILB hole.

Bet he lasts past the 2nd and maybe is still available in the 4th. Just kiddng, I already lost a bet to you last year on the draft. ;)

This is the first thing that jumped into my mind.

There is a fine line for me on this. If Whiz loves him some Cam or Gabby then I would be thrilled with us going QB at 5. If Whiz loves him some Mallet or Ponder or.... I would be a bit unhappy with picking one at 38.

It will be telling if we do take a QB in this draft after round 1. To me it is a statement to the lack of faith in Skelton. As several have posted picking a mid round QB for development is counter productive and a wasted pick unless they believe Skelton doesn't belong in the NFL.

So I agree with you with the exception of drafting a 1st rd QB.

Well to be honest I could see him lasting until the 4th seeing as the draft is all about hype and with so little hype around Harvey I could envisage him going under the radar and someone nabbing him in the 4th or even 5th. I was speaking in talent terms earlier where I feel his worthy of 2nd to 3rd selection.

Well, what did you expect?

Graves was busy clipping his finger nails, and we all know that he can't do two things at once... ;)

No.

- We need a starter (logically either Gabbert/Newton or, more likely, a veteran).

- We need a QBOF

- We need someone in-between - either a veteran (i.e. Bartels (who looked good enough to be one of our backups), another veteran new guy or Skelton.

If I had to roll dice, it would be on (1) a veteran, (2) Bartels &/or Skelton or a second-echelon QB like Ponder and (3) Bartels or Skelton &/or a second-echelon QB like Ponder. Quite possibly, we might open the season with 4 QB's, with Wiz letting them duke it out in training camp and preseason to make the final 3 QB roster.

I think the hope by the Cardinal brass is that Skelton will earn the right to be better than #3; but the Cards aren't about to bet their entire season on it right now. Instead they'll want to have a little insurance both in front of him and behind him on the depth chart.

Reed is a guy who is a decent player who is watching his stock rise because he is physically gifted. However, temper your enthusiasm. He was fanatstic early last year against inferior competition, but as the season wore on he did not produce at the same level. One thing though is he has been a starter for 3 years and is not relying on one great season as his statistical basis. Is he deserving of his ranking, maybe. Someone will take a mid 2nd to early 3rd round flyer on him and wil likely get good value.

It looks like Harvey has visits scheduled for Pittsburgh, Jacksonville, & the Cardinals.
