As for Chandler, Phoenix continues to be intrigued by the idea of gambling on a big man who, when healthy, has the qualities Nash been lobbying for: Chandler's athleticism, defensive presence and mobility. But Phoenix also fears that bringing him in will drag the Suns right back into the sort of financial straits that motivated them to dump Shaquille O'Neal's contract to Cleveland for two players (Wallace and Sasha Pavlovic) who have no future in the desert.

Please Sarver / Kerr, do this deal. I believe the Suns would still be just under the LT. (Anyone want to verify?) Just keep Amare. Let him dominate for a year. And if he show's that he's "back," give him a contract offer. If not, let him go and have an enormous amount of cap space to play with.

The only other option at this point that somewhat intrigues me is the rumored ATL deal. But please don't trade Amare for GS's role players without getting Randolph or Curry in return.

I agree with this move for next year. But the financial commitment worries me if he can't stay healthy. Especially if Amare and Nash end up leaving after next year.

If we are going to go for it all next year like that then I would still like to get someone who is a a strong perimeter defender and 3 point shooter. Trevor Ariza anyone?

Bringing in Chandler only makes sense to me if youre going to keep Amare. He can bring defense and rebounding, and wouldnt need the touches Shaq got, allowing Amare to maybe go for big points per game in a contract year.

However if the Suns bring in Chandler, and ship out Amare Ill once again be entirely confused by what the plan is.

I completely agree - no sense bringing in Chandler at all if Amare is gone.

agreed. if you can get chandler healthy and keep amare, then you've got a fairly young front court if earl clark develops. you're looking at clark 6'9 at SF, amare 6'10 PF, and chandler 7'1 C. that's a nice long frontcourt (again, if clark can play). clark and chandler's defense could make up for amare's shortcomings there. of course, we have to revamp the backcourt entirely (nash just too old, j-rich just not that good, barbs is a 3rd guard, and dragic . . . well, dragic).

I am on the same boat as you, and many in this thread.

According to hoopshype, the Suns are presently at $62 million with Wallace and Pavlovic. They will drop $3.5 million when they do not renew Pavlovic (he only has $1.5 million guaranteed). They will add $1.5 million for their first round pick. So, they are at about $60 million--far under the LT WITH Wallace still on the roster.

Wallace is at $14 million, Chandler is at $11.8 which is within the 25% differential, so the Suns would drop another $2.3 million by trading for Chandler. That would put them at roughly $58 million in salaries for the coming year, barring any trades or FA signees.

That is not a bad number.

That is incorrect. Hoopshype does not add in team options into the calculation. You need to add in Nash's $13 mil to the total. That puts us at $71 million. Hill? Final roster spots? Nash is the key. We need to not pick up his option, then sign him for less money. Or, he may leave, but then we are on the hook for a some of that salary because it's partially guaranteed IIRC.

If you can find a way to get this done I would do it. It's a good risk IMO. It comes down to which option is better. Chandler/Amare combination or figure out some crap combo with the crap that GS is willing to send us (assuming we can't get Curry or Randolph).

I would rather have Chandler/Amare then anything that will come back in the GS as it stands today.

If we do get Tyson Chandler, than it should totally change the Suns' mindset. I'd lock up Amare to a long term deal, and we'd have a young and well balanced front court in TC, Amare, Clark, and Studley. We're definitely a playoff team if everybody stays healthy. However, we'd still need to make a play for a defensive oriented guard in order to become borderline contenders. That means we'll have to part with either J-Rich or Barbs.

Chandler and Amare balance one another well. I agree. Tayshawn Prince might be available. Can he play guard or is he more of a SF

He is as SF as it gets...

He can still guard 2s, in fact because he's such a skinny bastard, he's better at it (see LeBron eviscerating him in the 2007 ECF). Ron Ron is another guy we might be able to sign and trade for; he's a guy I've wanted on the Suns for a while. This team desperately needs some toughness. As Kenny always says, it's a problem when the toughest guy on your team is your point guard, and for all of Nash's defensive problems, the guy is tougher than nails. Ariza is another guy who the Suns are interested in. He's EXACTLY what the Suns need. He can play the two also.

Again, getting Chandler is THE ONLY WAY I would want Amare on this team next year, otherwise, get beat, Stat!

Clark-Stat-Chandler

That's a frontcourt I could live with....

In all honesty, I would even send Barbosa in return for filler to facilitate this trade. That's how big a deal I think Amare and Tyson are together. This deal HAS TO get done.

As far as Dragic goes, I am fine with him as the primary backup to Nash. He showed some stuff the last half of last season and I think he'll ultimately be good for us. So, I don't think the Suns need to shop around for a backup, but if something falls in their laps, then of course you explore it, but this doesn't need to be an active thing, IMO....

I like the front court option... back court won't be that bad with Nash, JRich, and Barbosa. We would still need Nash's backup. Again, lots of if's... if Chandler can stay healthy and if Clark lives up to his potential, this is a playoff contender team.

Today they had an update in the AZ Republic saying the deal is not likely because the Suns would have lots of money for the 2010 free agent market of they don't get Chandler. Not sure I want Chandler now, or a 2010 free agent later!

Didn't it also say that the Suns were wanting to get picks out of the deal too. Wallace for Chandler and a #1. It makes me laugh. Sarver, the only owner that does that kind of deal is you! Do you really think that someone else would do this?

2010 is way overblown. There are so many teams clearing cap space just for that free agency (the Nets are already saying the plan to sign two players to max contracts), that the really great free agents are going to snapped up by the more promising teams, and the rest of the teams are going to end up overpaying some borderline all-star just to appease their fans.
